In his first coaching job, former Pacers player Vern Fleming, joined Coach Isiah Thomas' staff as an assistant prior to the 2000-01 season.
Fleming played 11 seasons with the Pacers, starting in 1984 when he was the teamís first-round draft pick (18th overall) out of the University of Georgia. He still ranks in the top 10 for the Pacers in seasons, games, minutes, field goals made, field goals attempted, field goal percentage, free throws made, free throws attempted, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, assists, steals and points. Fleming eventually retired after playing briefly with the New Jersey Nets in 1996.
A member of the 1984 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic menís basketball team, the 40-year-old (2/4/62) Fleming was pursuing business interests before landing with Thomasí staff.
Fleming is a native of New York City.
