Octavio De La Grana begins his fourth year with the Miami HEAT and his second as Player Development Coach/Advance Scout. In this position, De La Grana is responsible for working with individual players in developing their game. He also serves as an advance scout, responsible for creating scouting reports of upcoming opponents.
Prior to joining the HEAT, De La Grana had a combined 18 years of head coaching experience at the high school level, including two stints at Florida Christian High School, where he led his team to the Class 2A State Championship in 1996. He also spent eight years as Head Coach of Westminster Christian High School’s basketball team. In 2005, he recorded his 400th high school coaching victory. During his tenure at Florida Christian, De La Grana also spent time as Florida Christian’s Athletic Director (1990-95) and taught health and personal fitness courses. De La Grana also established Coach D’s Basketball Camp in 1996, which is still held every summer in Miami for area youth.
De La Grana is a graduate of Liberty University where he graduated with a degree in general studies. He attended high school and played basketball at Florida Christian, where, in 1979, he was chosen All-Dade County and remains in the Athletic Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Angie, reside in Palmetto Bay with their six children, Derrick, Daniel, Chelsea, Jenny, Annie and Leah.
