Johnny Davis brings a wealth of basketball experience to the Memphis Grizzlies as he enters his 34th year as a former player, assistant coach, front office executive and two-time head coach. As a heavily recruited high school All-American basketball player from Detroit, Michigan, Davis was voted as one of the Top 10 players of all time in the Detroit Public School league. On the way to being drafted as the 22nd pick in the 1976 NBA Draft, Davis earned two gold medals as a member of the 1975 Pan-American Team and the 1975 Intercontinental Cup Team. Davis, who attended the University of Dayton from 1973-76 was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1993 as well as being voted onto the university’s All Century Team. The 2009-10 season will mark Davis’ third campaign with the Grizzlies and his 20th season as an NBA coach. Davis spent ten years in the NBA as a player with the Portland Trail Blazers, Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Davis and the Grizzlies’ head coach, Lionel Hollins, were teammates on the Portland Trailblazers Championship Team in 1977. Davis was the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996-97, the Orlando Magic over parts of two seasons (2003-05), compiling a career record of 73-146 (.333). Davis was voted as Coach of the Month in November of 2005 for Eastern Conference coaches while with the Orlando Magic. In addition to his stints as a head coach in the NBA, Davis has been an NBA assistant for 17 years. He has worked for the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves and the Indiana Pacers. Davis also has experience on the administrative side of the NBA having spent three years in the front office of the Atlanta Hawks. His duties were director of community affairs, assistant to the president, and president of the Atlanta Hawks Foundation. During his tenure as president of the Atlanta Hawks Foundation, Davis was instrumental in the fundraising of over $500,000 which was distributed to Atlanta area homeless shelters. Davis has a bachelor’s degree in community development from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in sports psychology from Union Institute and University. In his spare time, Davis enjoys jazz music and hobbies which include learning to play the piano and golf. He has recorded three hole-in-ones. Davis and his wife, Lezli, have two sons, Reginald and Austin.
