With over 30 years of NBA experience, former head coach Johnny Davis joins the Grizzlies from the Indiana Pacers, where he served as an assistant coach last season in his second stint with the team.
Prior to rejoining the Pacers organization as an assistant coach, Davis was the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1996-97 campaign (22-60). Davis also served as head coach for parts of two seasons with the Orlando Magic (2003-04, 2004-05) where he went 20-51(.282) after succeeding Doc Rivers during the 2003-04 season and 31-33 the following season (.482). He has a career head coaching record of 73-144 (.336).
In addition to his stints as a head coach in the NBA, Davis has been an NBA assistant coach for 14 years, seeing duty with the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Davis has been involved in the NBA over a span of 30 years either in the front office or on the basketball court. As a front office administrator, Davis has taken on a wide array of responsibilities. He spent three years as director of community affairs and president of the Atlanta Hawks Foundation, as well as serving as the assistant to the president of the Hawks.
Selected in the second round (22nd overall) by Portland in the 1976 NBA Draft, Davis spent 10 years in the league with the Portland, Indiana, Atlanta and Cleveland. He averaged 12.9 points per game and 4.5 assists per game during his career. As a rookie, he was an integral part of Portland’s 1977 NBA World Championship team.
Davis attended the University of Dayton, and was inducted into the school’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Davis has a bachelor’s degree in community development from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in sports psychology from Union Institute and University/Vermont College.
Davis and his wife, Lezli, have two sons, Reginald and Austin.
