John Carroll
College - Dickinson College '77
John Carroll is entering his sixth season as assistant coach for the Boston Celtics. He was named to the Celtics coaching staff on June 23, 1997.

Overall, Carroll is entering his seventh season in the NBA. He was the advance pro scout for the Orlando Magic under former Magic head coach Brian Hill during the 1996-97 season. He served in the same capacity in 1995-96 for head coach P.J. Carlesimo of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Carroll was the head basketball coach for Duquesne University from 1989-1995. He was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year following the 1990-91 season as he led the Dukes to their best-ever Atlantic 10 record with a 10-8 league mark. Carroll’s 1994-95 squad posted 18 wins, which was the most by a Duquesne team in 10 years. The Dukes also made their first post-season appearance in 13 years, advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in 1994-95.

Before coaching Duquesne, Carroll was an assistant coach for seven years at Seton Hall for P.J. Carlesimo. Carroll was the chief recruiter for the Pirates, who rose to the top of the Big East and to national prominence in the 1980s. Seton Hall earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1988 and reached the NCAA Championship Game in 1989.

Carroll was the head basketball coach at Bloomfield College, in Bloomfield, N.J. from 1979-82. The Deacons were 42-38 under Carroll and advanced to the NAIA District Finals twice in three seasons.

Carroll’s coaching career began at the University of Delaware, where he was a graduate assistant/basketball coach from 1977-79.

As a player, Carroll was a four-year starter at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where he earned a degree in Psychology in 1977. He played point guard and as a senior captained his 1973 Summit High School basketball team to the New Jersey State Championship. That team was the winningest in school history with a 24-2 mark.

John and his wife, Beverly, have a son, Austin, and reside in Bedford, MA.
