Joe Prunty begins his second season with the Cleveland Cavaliers after being named an assistant coach in July 2010. He brings 15 seasons of NBA experience to the Cavaliers coaching staff. Prunty was most recently an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers for two seasons (2008-2010). While with the Trail Blazers, the team had back-to-back 50 win seasons for the first time in 10 years, since 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, as well as their first playoff appearances in five years. Prunty began his coaching career in 1992 at the high school level in San Diego where he coached at the University of San Diego High School and St. Augustine High School. While at USDHS, he coached both the Lakersí Luke Walton and the Cubsí Mark Prior.


Prior to joining the Blazers, Prunty served as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks for three seasons (2005- 08), during which the team went an NBA-best 178-68 (.724) and reached the Finals in 2006. Prunty spent the previous nine seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, helping the Spurs win three NBA Championships (1999, 2003 and 2005) in various capacities. He began his NBA career in the summer of 1996 with the Spurs as the assistant video coordinator, before being named an assistant coach at the University of San Diego in April 1997. He returned to the Spurs the following season in 1997-98 as video coordinator and was promoted to assistant coach/video coordinator during the summer of 2000. He was promoted again in 2002-03 to assistant coach/advance scout where he remained for three seasons before heading to Dallas.


Before his start in the NBA, Prunty also coached on the high school and collegiate levels for four years. He began coaching in 1992 at the University of San Diego High School and then St. Augustine High School. While at USDHS, he coached both the Lakersí Luke Walton and former Cubs pitcher Mark Prior.


A native of Sunnyvale, California, Prunty remains active in the summers. He has served as either head coach or an assistant coach in each of the NBAís summer leagues for his respective team, and he has also worked numerous summer camps, including NBA Basketball Without Borders Europe in Turkey, NBA Developmental Camp in Indonesia, NBA Fit Camps in China, ABCD camp, Superstars, Pepperdine University, and University of San Diego.


Prunty played collegiately at De Anza College in Cupertino, California and earned a bachelorís degree in speech communications from California Poly San Luis Obispo in 1991. He and his wife, Laura, were married in the summer of 2002 and have one son, Luke.
