Director, Team Conditioning
Recognized as one of the NBA’s senior and most respected strength and conditioning coaches, Greg Brittenham is in his 20th season with the Knicks.
“Athleticism is more than just lifting weights in the weight room,” says Greg, a member of the staff for both Knicks Eastern Conference Championship teams of the 1990s. “It includes balance, body control, eye-hand co-ordination. It’s no longer about just being in the weight room and seeing how big you can get.”
“Greg has been with us for 20 years now, and what he does, he’s got down pat,” says Head Coach Mike D’Antoni. “A lot of our young players will need to develop physically, and he’s done that and will continue to do so. His enthusiasm has not waned at all, and his experience level is unmatched.”
“I get to work with a player who has reached his full potential athletically,” says Greg. “Everybody has room for improvement and it’s our job to find weak areas, then eliminate the weaknesses and enhance the strengths.”
Brittenham is the holder of an undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a Masters degree in kinesiology from Indiana University. His father Dean is a 50-year veteran of the training field.
“I have known Greg and his father Dean going on 20 years now, all the way back to our days in Indiana together,” says Knicks President, Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh. “He and Dean were both experts in speed development and functional conditioning, and he has taken his expertise to this franchise – the New York Knicks – for the last two decades.”
"Greg and his wife Luann have two children: Max (a Division I pitcher at Mount St. Mary’s University) and Rachel (a point guard at Wofford College). Greg has backpacked through Alaska in 11 of the last 12 summers, including this past year’s trip to Barrol, just below the Arctic Circle. He volunteers much of his time to working with area high school athletes.
During his Alaska trips, Greg is actively involved with the Fairbanks-based Challenge Life Youth Foundation, working with native Alaskan youth and emphasizing the importance of health and fitness, academic success, drug and alcohol education awareness and community and cultural heritage.
