Now in his third season in the NBA, Dean Demopoulos was hired by the SuperSonics as an assistant coach on June 1, 2001. Demopoulos joined Seattle after 17 seasons as an assistant at Temple University and one season as head basketball coach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
During his stint at UMKC, the Kangaroos were ranked in the top-10 nationally in several categories including fewest turnovers per game (second at 9.5), scoring defense (ninth at 60.5) and free-throw percentage (ninth at .761).
Before coaching the Kangaroos, Dean spent 17 years as an assistant coach for Hall of Fame inductee and longtime Temple Head Coach John Chaney.
Alongside Chaney, Demopoulos’ coaching helped transform the Owls into a national basketball powerhouse. During Dean’s 17 years on staff, Temple made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 11 consecutive trips to the postseason from the 1989-90 season to 1999-00.
Also during his time at Temple, the Owls amassed a record of 393-151 (.722), advanced to the Elite Eight four times, won seven Atlantic 10 Conference Championships and captured five Atlantic 10 Tournament crowns.
Temple completed the 1987-88 season with a 32-2 record and was ranked first in the final Associated Press, UPI and USA Today/CNN polls.
Under the guidance of Demopoulos, 14 Temple players went on to play in the NBA, including current stars Eddie Jones, Aaron McKie and the 2000-01 NBA Rookie of the Year runner-up Marc Jackson.
A native of Philadelphia, Demopoulos coached at Kennett (Penn.) High School prior to his job at Temple. He holds a bachelor’s degree in comprehensive social sciences from West Chester University in Pennsylvania. He graduated from West Chester in 1977.
Demopoulos and his wife Pam have a daughter Allie and a son James.
