Joined the staff on the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach on September 15, 2005. Prior to that, he served as an assistant and a scout with the Chicago Bulls 2002-04. Before working with the Bulls, he served as head coach of the NBDL Huntsville Flight. He also spent 2000-2001 as head coach of the CBA Quad City Thunder, where he was also responsible for all basketball personnel decisions and player recruitment. In 1999-2000, Thornton was an assistant coach for the CBA Champion Yakima Sun Kings. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the collegiate level, with Chapman University (1997-98) and Cal State Fullerton (1998-99).

His NBA playing career started with the selection by the New York Knicks in the fourth round (87th overall) of the 1984 NBA Draft. As an eight -year veteran of the NBA, Thornton played for five NBA teams (New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards). He played three seasons in the Italian A-1 League with Rome, Siena, and Pavia and college basketball at California-Irvine, where he also received a bachelorís degree in Social Science.
