Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand was named the Western Conference Player of the Week today for the week ending January 29. Brand averaged 24.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 blocks in leading the Clippers to a perfect 4-0 record that extended the team’s overall winning streak to a season-high five games. Brand also shot 54.9% from the floor and 82.6% from the free throw line during the week.
Brand began the week by scoring 28 points to lead the Clippers to rally from a 19-point second half deficit and defeat the Golden State Warriors 96-93 at the Arena in Oakland on January 22. Brand also hit 14 of 21 field goals in scoring 33 points while posting his 25th double-double of the season with 10 rebounds to lead the Clippers to a 105-87 win at Denver on January 27, which snapped the Nuggets seven-game winning streak. The following night, Brand scored 17 points and had eight rebounds along with a season-high eight assists to lead the Clippers to their largest margin of victory this season in a 112-79 win over Denver at STAPLES Center.
This is Brand’s third player of the week award this season. He first received the award for the week ending November 20 after averaging 25.0 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots in leading the Clippers to a 3-0 record. He was also recognized with the award for the week ending December 11, after averaging 31.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game.
Brand was also named the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Month for November 2005 after averaging 23.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in leading the Clippers to a 10-5 record.
Brand has now been named NBA Player of the Week five times during his career, earning all five awards with the Clippers. Brand first earned the recognition for the week ending December 9, 2001. He was also named player of the week for the week ending January 4, 2004, in addition to his three awards this season.
