CLIPPERS HISTORY ARCHIVE
1990-91 SEASON
by Ralph Lawler

On May 25, 1990, former NBA Coach of the Year Mike Schuler was named to replace Don Casey as coach of the Clippers. He’d Won 127 games and lost 74 in two and a half years of coaching the Portland Trail Blazers. His teams were noted as fast-breaking and high scoring. It looked like a good fit for this promising young Clipper team.

There was some concern because Ron Harper would not be available until mid-season because of his surgically repaired knee. Still, the front court was deep and talented with Danny Manning, Charles Smith, Benoit Benjamin, Ken Norman and Loy Vaught.

The season began with a pair of wins and then four losses. Schuler’s team could score all right, but they had a tough time at the defensive end.

The Clippers stayed in the hunt early. They were 10-10 through their first 20 games. The highlight in that stretch was a franchise record-tying 52-point explosion by Charles Smith against the Nuggets in Denver on December 1.

The hope was just to keep the playoffs within range until Harper returned. The next four weeks would make that a moot point. They dropped 12 of their next 13 and were never in contention again. Without Harper, the Clippers had no guards who could score the ball.

Harper returned for the second half of the season and managed to contribute almost 20 points a game, but was clearly not the dominating presence he had been before the injury. There was a glimpse of this team’s potential from mid-March to mid-April when they won 10 of 14 games. That was enough to keep Schuler on the job and enough to make us all optimistic about the 91-92 season to come.
