CLIPPERS HISTORY ARCHIVE
1988-89 SEASON
by Ralph Lawler

It looked like the team’s run of bad luck might be turning when the Clippers won the NBA’s first draft Lottery in the Spring of 1988. The prize was clearly consensus college player of the year Danny Manning who had just led Kansas to the NCAA Championship. Coach Shue had years earlier coached Danny’s father, Ed Manning. Now, he’d coach the 22 year old son who possessed point guard skills and vision in a 6-10 body.

Even with the certainty of Manning, Elgin Baylor wanted even more on draft day; and he got it. The GM engineered a 3-team deal that netted the rights to two more draft picks – Gary Grant from Seattle and Charles Smith from Philadelphia. The net result of Manning, Smith and Grant made this the greatest draft day in Clipper history. This looked like it was going to be a very special season.

Not too fast, Ralphie boy. Manning tore an ACL in game 30 in Milwaukee. Eight games later, Shue was fired after a 21-point loss to the Lakers at the Forum. Assistant Don Casey took over, and an 11-game losing streak stretched to 19.

Still, from mid-March through mid-April, there were some signs of life. The club split 20-games 10 &10 even without Manning. Ken Norman had a fine second season averaging 18 points a game. Grant and Smith had solid rookie seasons, and Benoit Benjamin ranked among the league leaders in blocked shots. Danny was coming back next season. There was light at the end of the tunnel despite a deeply disappointing 21-61 season.
