    BRIAN SIEMAN'S PREGAME REPORT

    Sieman
Coming off a road trip where the Clips went 1-2, and very easily could have gone 2-1, it’s not a real treat for them to come home and play Chris Paul and the Hornets. Add the fact that the Clippers will try to add another low post scorer to the mix and they’ve got their hands full.

The Hornets last year surprised almost everyone in the league. Not because they made the playoffs and were solid all year, but because they finished just a game behind the Lakers for the best record in the conference. They’ve gotten off to a shaky start this season, they’ve won their last two games (against the NBA’s worst, Oklahoma City) to put them at 7-5 on the year, a couple of games off their pace from last season (9-3). If you’re looking for the reason they’ve been slow this year, Chris Paul is not the answer. He just continues to dominate the game. He’s coming off the fifth triple double (29p, 16a, 10r) of his already brilliant career and will look for blood against the Clips without any noted perimeter defenders. Paul is one a few players in the league that you can’t help but appreciate. He’s great in the community, and better on the floor. He has help with All Stars in David West and Peja Stojakovic, and don’t forget James Posey, who’s been on two of the last three championship teams (Miami, Boston). Tyson Chandler also provides a presence inside as one of the best rebounders in the league and will need to have the Clippers attention all game long.

The Hornets are solid offensively with Paul creating for himself and others, but Peja has struggled this year averaging just 12 points a game. Sadly for the Clipps, STAPLES is his favorite place to play (against the Clippers or the Lakers). In 29 games at STAPLES, he’s shooting 45% from the 3-point line (78-171) and averaging 20-points a game. The Clips have to stay at home on him all game or it could be curtains early.

Meanwhile for the Clippers, they’ll look to integrate two new faces in Zach Randolph and Marty Collins. Randolph is a stat stuffing machine and Collins should help the Clipps out on the wings defensively. With the trade, others will now have to really step it up big time. Ricky Davis who has a career FG% of 44% needs to start making shots. He’s shooting less then 30% in the first 13 games and has been in double figures just one time. Also, Eric Gordon will see some significant minutes from here on out and we’ll have to hope his learning curve is shorter then most. With Ricky now starting and Tim Thomas in NY, the bench isn’t as deep as it once was, Gordon’s ability to score will be vital for the Clipps to succeed.

If the Clips can protect the ball, hit the boards, and slow down Paul in the transition, they’ll have a shot at tackling one of the NBA’s best while they’re still in the embryonic stages of this teams development.
