BRIAN SIEMAN'S PREGAME REPORT
 Sieman |
Round 2 with the Nuggets will find both teams having a major face-lift since the last time they met just 4 weeks ago. Days after escaping STAPLES with an overtime win from the Clippers, the Denver Nuggets dealt Allen Iverson to Detroit for hometown boy Chauncey Billups. It’s an admission from the Nuggets that the A.I. and Melo experiment failed, with only two play-off appearances and just 1 win (game, not series) to show for it. Now, they have a point guard with a championship pedigree and a pass first mentality; it’s a totally different team. Before the Nuggets had a shot at the post season, now they might be able to advance.
After a slow start, they’ve responded with Billups, going 8-2 in their last 10. And even though Carmelo’s scoring is the lowest it’s been since he’s been in the league, his assist and rebound numbers are at career highs. Melo is still a beast, and can light it up in a hurry. While an unofficial category, he might lead the league in easiest baskets made, and with time, Billups will only help that number. Billups is a floor leader, something that the Nuggets haven’t had before. Anthony Carter, their starting point guard the last 2 opening nights, is a nice player, but only as a back up. And then there is Nene. He’s been in the witness protection program the last 4 season with a variety of aliments, but is now back and is putting up big time numbers. I’m not really sure the Clippers can even use the game tape from the Halloween match-up, there was no Melo and no Billups, only A.I., and lots of him. As for the Clips, well, things have changed for them as well.
Tonight, Clipper Nation will get to watch Zach Randolph for the first time in a Clipper uniform. Randolph will join (finally) a team that is making strides, but they’re just not long enough. Randolph’s impact will be great, but it might take a while for the full effect to be felt. For the time being, he’ll add great punch off the bench—which will scratch the Clippers right where they itch—and help the Clips on the boards. Meanwhile, Baron has really looked comfortable the last few times out and the numbers show it (22p – 8a – 46%FG and 38% 3-pt%). If Eric Gordon can do half of what he did against the Hornets (25 points) on a regular basis, the wins will come. Tonight is as good of a place as any to start.
