    BRIAN SIEMAN'S PREGAME REPORT

    Sieman
Round three with the Mavericks this afternoon will hopefully have the Clippers ready and rested and able to regain the form that had them out in front of Dallas by 15 points in the second half the last time these two met. The Clips were playing with heavy legs the last few times out and the results showed as the team looked like they were running in mud against both the Buck and Raptors. But with the Holidays came a nice six-day hiatus that will hopefully help the busiest starting five recuperate.

There is an old Jerry Reed song that goes, "When you’re hot you’re hot, when you’re not you’re not," and it’s been pretty fitting for the Clippers of late. When there are rolling, they’re capable of beating anyone, but when they aren’t, they’ll fall prey to the sub -.500 (exhibit A & B: Double digit losses to Milwaukee and Toronto). Last time in Dallas, the Clips were the former in the late Mr. Reed’s song, and absolutely dominated the Mavs on both sides of the ball for 44 minutes. Zach Randolph was able to do whatever he wanted. In fact, if he wanted to take the Mavericks’ team plane for a spin I’m not sure they could have stopped him. But in the final four minutes, the Mavs said uncle and went to a zone, which tested the Clips to be more patient, a test they would fail. Quick shots would leave the Clippers in bad spots in the transition game gave the Mavs all the opening they needed. You don’t win 67 games two years ago and forget how to come back from behind. Dallas showed that on this night, and the Clippers must remember that it’ll take four quarters to dispose of the Mavs.

Dallas was bad to start the season, but have turned it around, and is sitting where most thought they’d be (bottom-middle) in the West. Now, they’ve overcome a terrible start, and have really had to do it without a main cog in Josh Howard. Howard has been in and out of the lineup with and ankle injury, and his teammates have to feel pretty good about his return and what they might be able to do. A new name to the Mav Mix is Jose Barea. Barea was the one who gave the Mavericks their only lead in the game earlier this month with a three late in the fourth. He’s come on to play a decent role for Head Coach Rick Carlisle.

If the Clippers can come back rested and healthy, they should pick up the win. But if Zach (knee) and Kaman (foot) are out of the line up they could be in trouble.
