Trevor Mbakwe, PF/C, Minnesota
While Mbakwe is not a polished offensive player, he is one of the best rebounders in the Draft. He plays with relentless energy. He averaged at least 8.5 rebounds in his three seasons with the Golden Gophers since transferring from Marquette after the 2007-08 season and an assault charge while attending Miami Dade Junior College. Mbakwe spent five seasons in college, following sitting out a year, so he enters the NBA as a 24-year-old. He is another player compared favorably to Kenneth Faried because of his physical attributes, but was slowed by a torn ACL seven games into his junior year. Most mock drafts have the forward going somewhere in the second round.
“Mbakwe's rebounding and energy are the keys to his value at the NBA level at this juncture,” Matt Kamalsky of Draft Express wrote. “A capable finisher thanks to his length and athleticism, Mbakwe is otherwise a mixed bag offensively. He was shooting a super-efficient 60.4% before his injury, and has proven to be a capable scorer at the college level, but is a limited shooter and unrefined back-to-the-basket scorer.”
