Jackie Carmichael, PF, Illinois St.
By most accounts, Carmichael, who somewhat resembles Kenyon Martin from a physical standpoint, had a monster senior season at Illinois State. He averaged 17.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and two blocks and was a presence in the post. Carmichael arrived on the scene his junior year when he blossomed with a 21-win team. He is strong, a good post defender, rebounder and can finish around the rim. He is athletic enough to play in the NBA and has good hands. The real downfall for Carmichael is that he lacks the perimeter game that is typically expected from NBA power forwards and will turn 24 in January. Most mock drafts place him firmly in the second round, but a few suggest he could rise to the bottom of round one.
“Carmichael is so tough and tries to finish everything around the rim with a dunk,” Chad Ford of ESPN wrote. “Despite the fact that the drills and games had nothing at stake, he was throwing his body around the floor and on several occasions tried to posterize [Mason] Plumlee in the paint. Some scouts believe Carmichael could be a Udonis Haslem-type player at the next level.”
