The Los Angeles Clippers Read to Achieve for Financial Literacy Program challenges students in elementary and middle school to take time out to read to earn Read to Achieve Dollars. Each participating student is asked to track the minutes they spend reading. Minutes read become currency as the students strive to become literate in the world of student finance and understand how dollars make sense.
Students will have opportunities to double their investment and earn additional Read to Achieve dollars by reading from a select list of children’s books that focus on financial literacy. They will also be able to select items to purchase using their reading currency. At the end of the program the five elementary school students and five middle school students with the most Read to Achieve dollars left will become members of the Clippers Financial Bank Shot Board.
- SPEND WISELY. Choose what you buy carefully, compare prices, and buy quality items that will last.
- MAKE YOUR MONEY WORK FOR YOU. Open a savings account at the credit union to earn interest on deposits.
- SAVE YOUR MONEY IN A SAFE PLACE. Carry only what you need for the day and save the rest in your credit union.
- KNOW WHY YOU ARE SAVING. Establish some saving goals and reasons to save.
- EVERY TIME YOU GET MONEY, SAVE SOME OF IT. Saving money regularly is the number one secret to building wealth. Make saving a habit for life.
High School students participate in an essay contest to express their knowledge of how earning, saving, spending and borrowing can affect their financial future. The top five essays will be selected. These five students will round out the Clippers Financial Bank Shot Board at fifteen members.
