Ballmer Stays Busy Following Fan Festival

By Dennis Rogers

What a day Monday was for the Clippers organization, the NBA and for new owner Steve Ballmer. The energy the fans and Mr. Ballmer brought to STAPLES Center was in a word…HARDCORE! Mr. Ballmer has been a very busy man in the sports world in the 48 hours following that energetic fan festival.

After spending all day Tuesday in the Clippers’ offices, Ballmer and Head Coach Doc Rivers sat with Magic Johnson at the Dodgers/Padres game.

“We all talked about all kinds of stuff, it was a great night,” Rivers said about the Dodgers game. “But in the end, we talked about winning and what it takes to be a winner.”

Speaking of winning, Mr. Ballmer headed back to his home in Seattle on Wednesday morning and headed straight to practice of the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks. Ballmer, who is good friends and neighbors with Head Coach Pete Carroll, chatted with members of the team and organization and even broke down a huddle with a little pep talk.

Football turned to a little friendly golf challenge post-practice as Mr. Ballmer competed against golf great Fred Couples and members of the Seahawks team in a closest to the pin competition.

After a best-of-three competition, Ballmer and Couples beat out a trio of Seahawks by each placing two of their three attempts on a floating green that was anchored in Lake Washington 90 yards from the Seahawks’ practice fields at Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, WA. Ballmer and Couples each attempted one final shot to break the tie with Ballmer being the one that came out on top with his shot landing on the green.

Couples, who has won 15 PGA Tour and 10 Champions Tour titles, will join Ballmer for the third time (they won a charity match on Aug. 4 against former college coach Rick Neuheisel and Mitch Levy of KJR 950 AM in Seattle) today as they play in the 2014 Boeing Classic Korean Air Pro-Am in Snoqualmie, WA. Also, joining them is Clippers All-Star point guard Chris Paul who is known to be a pretty good golfer himself.
