Ryan's Prospect Profile

Ryan Gomes, from Providence, finishes a drill at the Sports Authority Training Center.
With the 2004 NBA Draft rapidly approaching and the Celtics holding three first round picks, Celtics.com will be bringing exclusive behind the scenes info from draft workouts held at The Sports Authority Training Center in Waltham.

Ryan Gomes is a 6-7 forward out of Providence, who hails from Waterbury Connecticut. Last season at Providence he averaged 18.9 points and 9.4 boards per game, while shooting 50.7 percent from the field. Gomes was a power forward in college, but will most likely have to switch to small forward if he hopes to make it in the NBA. Gomes is projected to go anywhere from the late first round to the second round in the 2004 draft. Check out what Gomes had to say following his workout with the Celtics.
Celtics.com: How do you think your workout went today?

Ryan Gomes: I think it went well. I was here yesterday, also, so I think it went well. There was a lot of shooting drills, a few two-on-two’s and a few one-on-one’s, but I think it went well.

Celtics.com: Have you worked out for any other teams?

Gomes: Yeah, I went to the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz and there are some other ones. I only went to three, and then I’m thinking about going to the pre-draft camp in Chicago next week, which probably, I will be going to that.

Celtics.com: Was your workout with the Celtics similar to the other ones, or are there differences?

Gomes: No, I would say that there are all pretty much similar. They did a lot of pick-and-roll stuff, and every team does that. Shooting drills and that’s about it.

Celtics.com: Ryan, being from Providence and the New England area, you must think the Celtics would be a good fit for you?

Gomes: Yeah, and I’m from Connecticut, so it won’t be too bad either way…college fans or my hometown family and my friends from back home in Connecticut. So, this would be a nice fit for me, ya know we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Celtics.com: What’s it like working out under all those championship banners?

Gomes: It feels good to see how many championships these guys won with Bird and McHale. Bird was in the Eastern Conference finals and McHale, so they have a lot of tradition here and this would be a great organization to be a part of.

Celtics.com: How did you feel about the “Celtics Run” at the end of the workout?

Gomes: It's pretty bad, like a lot of guys said. It tests a lot of things, including your mental toughness, so it's pretty good. Every team does something different, condition-wise, at the end and this was probably one of the-I don't want to say the toughest-but, I mean, it was a good way to measure a lot of things.
