Draft Workouts 2005 – David Lee

Celtics Draft Central 2005 »

With the 2005 NBA Draft rapidly approaching and the Celtics holding the 18th, 50th and 53rd picks overall, Celtics.com will be bringing exclusive behind the scenes info from draft workouts held at The Sports Authority Training Center in Waltham.

David Lee is a 6-9 power forward out of Florida and one of the few college seniors looking to be selected in the first round. He is an athletic, crafty player in the low block known for his work ethic. As a senior he averaged 13.6 points and 9.0 boards per game as Florida went 24-8. For his career Lee averaged 11.3 points and 6.8 boards per game, although he may best be known for winning the McDonald’s All-American High School Slam Dunk Competition his senior year in high school. Check out what Lee had to say after his workout for the Celtics.

Celtics.com: How do you think your workout went today?

David Lee: It went well. It’s great to get in here; I heard that today was a difficult workout, and it was a real challenge, and I think things went real well.

Celtics.com: Have you been on some other workouts before this one with the Celtics?

Lee: Yeah, this is my fourth; it’s actually my third in three days. I think the drills they did were very appropriate to what they were looking to see us do, and it was just a great workout overall.

Celtics.com: What do you think of that ‘Celtics Run’ drill at the end of the workout?

Lee: That’s become notorious around the country. Everyone knows that that’s one of the toughest drills that anybody does, and I was really looking forward to it, and I think I did ok in that.

Celtics.com: A lot of the talk surrounding you is what position you would play in the NBA, where do you think that you fit in the league?

Lee: I think I could be a 4 man; a guy that’s an explosive 4 man. I’m about 6’9” and a half, so I’m a guy that can not only step out and try to pivot on the perimeter, but also post-up.

Celtics.com: Coming from Florida, if you landed with the Celtics, do you think you would have any difficulties dealing with the weather differences?

Lee: I’m from St. Louis originally so I’m used to this kind of weather. There’s a little bit more snow here, but I don’t mind it at all.

Celtics.com: What’s it like to come into Boston, workout for the team, and see all those retired numbers and championship banners hanging from the wall?

Lee: I couldn’t believe the number of championships they won in a row back in the day. I always see them on ESPN Classic; and the tradition and the wealth of basketball around this city – it would be a pleasure to play here.
