This Date in Celtics Playoff History

Cousy
When you look in the Celtics record book, the win recorded on April 24, 1963 may not stand out much from all the rest. But is was on this day in Celtics history that one of the most memorable television highlights in team history was recorded.

Bob Cousy led the Celtics with 18 points and then used his ball-handling wizardry to run out the clock, closing the curtain on the Celtics sixth World Championship.

But just before the clock ran out, Cousy’s last action of his Hall of Fame career was forever captured of camera to be replayed for future generations to see. He heaved the ball into the rafters as the final buzzer sounded.

After 13 seasons, one of the greatest point guards ever to play the game retired to take the head coaching position at Boston College.

“I’ve always wanted to be the best,” said Cousy after the game. “It wasn’t good enough to be good enough. It wasn’t enough to be very good. I had to be the best, because that’s what it’s all about.

“So I wanted to go out with a good last game for myself. I wanted to go out on a winning game, and I wanted to go out with a world championship.

“God was good to me. He granted me my final wish.”
