Danny Ainge told reporters on Thursday that five veteran Celtics would represent the team in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League this July. Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Orien Greene and Dwayne Jones are all slated to participate in the league, which runs from July 6-14. The Celtics' first round draft pick would also likely join them in Vegas.
"Ryan wants to play, Al wants to play. They didn't bat an eye when I told them. Playing is a lot more fun than this," said Ainge, referring to offseason workouts going on behind him.
All five guys were working out with assistant coaches, as well as Raef LaFrentz and Tony Allen. Delonte West is also eligible to play in the Summer League but will not participate.
"Delonte played a lot of minutes this year. Had Al maybe played the minutes we had hoped, before he got hurt, maybe we would feel he wouldn't need the minutes as much," Ainge said. "But because he missed those last 25 games, I think he could use some minutes to break up his workout routine this summer."
Ainge noted that the team is still being cautious with Allen, who's still rebounding from last season's knee issues and won't likely participate this summer despite having an outstanding Summer League last year. While Ainge didn't completely rule it out the possibility of Allen playing, he seemed pretty sure that Allen would not play.
"We'll probably keep Tony out and make sure he's 100% healthy by training camp." Ainge said.
