Celtics Select Al Jefferson With 15th Overall Pick
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics selected forward Al Jefferson with the 15th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. The team then selected Delonte West with the 24th pick and Tony Allen with the 25th pick in the first round. In the second round, the Celtics selected Justin Reed with the 40th pick.
Jefferson, a 6-10, 265lb forward was an early entry candidate in the 2004 NBA Draft, coming out of Prentiss High School in Prentiss, Mississippi. As a senior, Jefferson averaged 42.6 points and 18.0 rebounds per game on his way to being named Mr. Basketball in the state of Mississippi. He was named All-State, All-Conference and Conference MVP all four seasons of high school. Jefferson was named to the 2004 McDonald’s All-American Team and was a First Team All-American by PARADE and USA Today.
West, a 6-4, 180lb guard played three seasons at St. Joseph’s before entering the 2004 NBA Draft as an early entry candidate. As a junior, West averaged 18.9 points per game on 51.0 percent shooting from the field. He was named a First Team All-American by Basketball Times on his way to becoming the 42nd player in St. Joseph’s history to score 1,000 points.
Allen, a 6-4, 213lb guard played the final two seasons of his collegiate career at Oklahoma State, averaging 15.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in 67 career games. As a senior, Allen was named Big 12 Player of the Year by the league’s coaches as he averaged 16.0 points per game and became the first player in school history to surpass the 1,000 career point mark in only two seasons.
Justin Reed, a 6-8, 240lb forward played his college basketball at Mississippi, where he averaged 14.6 points per game in 122 career games. As a senior, Reed averaged 18.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as he was named to the All-SEC First Team.
