Celtics Captain Paul Pierce Makes History

Boston Celtics Captain Paul Pierce made basketball history on Thursday, November 17 becoming the first NBA player to shoot a revolutionary new product. Pierce debuted and helped deliver the first 200 of Spalding’s new NEVERFLAT basketball in a special appearance at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Danvers, MA.

Approximately 150 youngsters, parents and Celtics fans attended the appearance and each had the opportunity to meet Paul and get his autograph.

Just in time for the holiday season, the NEVERFLAT basketball marks the first time since Spalding manufactured the game’s original basketball more than a hundred years ago that air is being replaced with a new substance. The ball is injected with seepage-fighting NitroFlate molecules that form a protective barrier against the inner wall of the ball’s bladder. This technology was developed by former NASA and Dupont scientists.

Pierce helped launch Spalding’s INFUSION basketball, which is manufactured with a built-in pump, five years ago. The INFUSION sales reached just over 1 million basketballs sold.

“You mean to tell me that if I leave this NEVERFLAT basketball out all night and it gets wet from the rain or cold, that it will still be as good as new – then this ball is definitely for me,” exclaimed Pierce. “The ball has a real good feel and you can use either indoors or outside.”
