Danny Ainge on Ryan Gomes and Orien Greene

Posted: June 29, 2005

"Ryan was a guy that we were considering in the first round - we’re big fans of Ryan’s and Orien Greene for that matter. Those are guys that we’re very excited to have. I don’t know if we could have drawn it up any better, it’s just lucky, its nothing we did that Ryan Gomes was there for us. Ryan was one of those guys who played four years of college ball and people probably saw all of his weaknesses but he’s a guy that we were seriously considering at 18."

"We couldn’t believe it, in the war room as we were getting to 40, people were saying trade 50 and 53 to get 42 or 45, but we are lucky that we got the guy, Ryan."

"He was a first team All-American last year and he’s a 20 point scorer and he rebounds and shoots, attitude, character. He’s one of the best players in the Big East the last few years. He’s a big time college player. I think he has a chance to be terrific player in this league."

"Orien Greene was a terrific high school player who played at the University of Florida he transferred to Louisiana- Lafayette. I saw him play in the NCAA tournament last year for the first time, and just really liked what I saw in him. He’s a kid who has underachieved a little bit in college because of injuries and some different things, but we had him in for workouts twice and he played very well in the workouts and held his own against Ukic and Jarret Jack, he doesn’t have the success of those guys. But we think with his physical talents, being 6-5 and long and athletic and playing the point guard in college, he’s just a different player with a lot of potential, a tall long point guard. He’s a terrific player, he can handle, he’s not a great shooter but his shot isn’t bad. He’s a guy who has played the point and has been a distributor."

“Ryan went through the draft process last year and all he was, was a first team All-American last year as a junior. I saw a game where he played against UConn at UConn, national champions, and Ryan went in and had 24 and 15 was scoring on Okafor and the whole team and was playing fantastic. He went through the draft process and was one of those guys who was an undersized 4, which our league is full of. Everyone told him to trim down and become more of a 3, so he went a trimmed down, changed his diet, and became more of a three. He had another fantastic season as a 3-man. He was pretty darn good, a little chubby and overweight and a little undersized and he got a lot better. I’m shocked; to me this is more of a shock than Gerald Green being there at 18. I think he could be a starter in this league."

"We saw Ryan play this year of course, but when he came for the workouts, he went to 22 workouts. He’s done everything it takes to make it; I think he’s a guy who has a lot to prove. I think it’s better to have him at 50 with a little more to prove, he’s already proven himself in college so he’s got a bright future."
