BOSTON (Sept. 29, 2011) – Today, the Celtics CommUNITY Crew, in partnership with Arbella Insurance and City Year, spent the day transforming the Mattahunt Elementary School in Mattapan. The Celtics CommUNITY crew consisted of a group of volunteers including; Boston Celtics Co-owner Stephen Pagliuca, Senator Scott Brown, Governor Deval Patrick, Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge, Boston Celtics Legend Dana Barros, Boston Celtics Team President Rich Gotham, Boston Celtics Play by Play Announcer Sean Grande, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, the entire Celtics staff, season ticket holders and team partners. The volunteers spent the day making over the school and community center grounds to provide a fun and safe learning environment for students.
The Celtics CommUNITY Crew is a new community based program run by the team and the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation. The Celtics CommUNITY Crew will volunteer at many different community projects throughout the year and will consist of members of the entire Celtics organization, coaching staff, corporate partners and season ticket holders.
“The Boston Celtics CommUNITY Crew initiative marks a renewal of the Celtics longstanding commitment to giving back and improving the communities we serve in impactful ways,” Boston Celtics President Rich Gotham said. “The CommUNITY Crew will allow us to extend the reach and scope of our community efforts through the volunteer involvement of the entire Celtics staff, as well as team partners and season ticketholders”.
Volunteers and City Year members spent the day painting murals on school walls, building an outdoor classroom, refurbishing a basketball court, and organizing the school’s library.
“It is heartwarming to see an organization like the Boston Celtics give back to the kids who love them so much. I’m honored to be involved in their efforts to improve the Mattahunt Elementary School and Community Center. Their tireless efforts to make this school a fun, safe, and effective learning environment will not only leave the greatest impact on these kids’ lives, but on all of the future students in the Mattapan community,” Senator Scott Brown said.
“Celtics CommUNITY Crew embodies the value of teamwork and turning to each other,” Governor Patrick said. “Through this program, leaders in government, the private sector and volunteer organizations are serving together to make our community a better place for the next generation of leaders.”
