Frank Ramsey - Biography

#23

One of the most unique features of the Boston Celtics franchise is that it acknowledges success on a macro level rather than a micro level. In other words, the team prefers organizational success like NBA championships over individual success like MVP awards.

Proof of this philosophy hangs in the rafters of TD Garden each and every day. There are 22 names retired by the Celtics, yet not all of those men experienced highly successful careers when it comes to statistics. One of those men is Frank Ramsey, who helped flood Boston with team success thanks to seven championships in nine seasons.

The Celtics drafted Ramsey out of Kentucky with the fifth overall selection in the 1953 draft. The 6-foot-3 guard-forward put together an impressive career at Kentucky that included the 1951 national championship and several national honors during his three seasons with the Wildcats. Coincidentally, Boston also selected two of Ramsey’s teammates, Cliff Hagan and Lou Tsioropoulos, in that draft as well.

As you may surmise, Ramsey experienced the greatest Celtics career out of that trio. He won an incredible seven championships in just nine seasons while he played alongside the likes of Bob Cousy, Bill Sharman, Bill Russell, Sam Jones and many more legends.

Although Ramsey never accumulated any eye-popping statistics during his nine-year career, he did finish with very solid numbers. He accumulated 8,378 points and 3,410 rebounds en route to career averages of 13.4 PPG and 5.5 RPG. His best statistical NBA season arrived in 1957-58, when he averaged 16.5 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 2.4 RPG in 69 contests. Interestingly enough, that season was one of only two in which his team did not take home the NBA title.

Ramsey was known for peaking at the right time. He had several dominant postseason runs that helped the Celtics take home numerous titles. From 1957-1961, Ramsey never scored less than 17.1 PPG or grabbed less than 6.4 RPG during the playoffs. His best postseason was in 1958-59, when he scored 23.2 PPG and grabbed 6.2 RPG while helping Boston take home the title. That’s a pretty impressive stat line considering that Ramsey was playing alongside four future Hall of Famers.

The Hall would call his name, too. Ramsey became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982, 16 years after the Celtics had inducted him into their own prestigious group. Boston raised Ramsey’s No. 23 jersey to the rafters in the fall of 1964, just months after his career came to an end.
