Leo Papile, Assistant Executive Director of Basketball Operations

Leo Papile

Entering his tenth year with the Boston Celtics, Leo Papile brings to the team over 30 years of basketball experience as both a player and a coach, along with a wealth of knowledge. Papile was promoted from Head Scout to Director of Player Personnel following the 1999-00 season.

Papile was hired on May 8, 1997, and his duties include evalu-ating basketball players at all levels, including the NBA, CBA, European and other international leagues, colleges, AAU programs and high schools.

Prior to joining the Celtics, Papile focused his efforts on building one of the nation's most prestigious amateur basketball programs. For the past 24 years, he's coached Boston youth in the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC), teaching them the game and helping direct the program. Having founded the organization in 1977, the Boston native has special ties to the BABC and has seen current NBA stars like Patrick Ewing and Dana Barros develop their basketball skills as members of the club. Along with handling his Head Scout duties, he will continue to serve as the director and a coach of the BABC.

Papile has a long list of coaching credits at all levels of the game. His keen eye for talent and tremendous teaching skills have been acquired from years of working with professional, college, and amateur athletes. From 1984-87, he was part of the coaching staff at Cleveland State University. During the 1986-87 season he was promoted from an Assistant to Associate Head Coach, and was part of the team that upset Indiana in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Regional Final before bowing out to David Robinson's Navy team.

Before taking the job at Cleveland State, Papile spent one season as the head man for Umana Technical High School in Boston.

Dealing with high school players was a change from his previous coaching stint from 1981-83. During that time, he served as both the Head Coach and General Manager for the Maine Lumberjacks of the CBA. While with the Lumberjacks, Papile matched wits with the likes of future NBA coaches Phil Jackson and George Karl.

Prior to jumping into professional basketball and the CBA, Papile spent time at the college level with Boston University, having served as an Assistant from 1979-81 at BU under Rick Pitino. The job with the Terriers and Pitino was preceded by a year as an Assistant at Suffolk University from 1978-79.

Along his basketball travels, Papile has been a part of some basketball history. From 1977-78, he served as the Head Coach and General Manager for the Quincy Chiefs of the Eastern Basketball League. That league was the predecessor to today's CBA, which provides a wealth of hidden talent for the NBA.

From 1973-77, Papile served as a Player/Coach for the O'Brien Basketball Club, a semi-pro league team in the Cranberry League.
