Celtics Legend Bob Cousy Presents Award

By: Jeff Twiss

The first two Bob Cousy Humanitarian Fund honorees are Board members and both gentlemen hail from the State of Maine – Ken Walsh and Harold Alfond. Both distinguished gentlemen are deeply committed to bettering the lives of young people through sports, most notably basketball.

Ken is the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Waterville, Maine. Under his leadership, this boys and girls club has stretched its impact throughout the State of Maine, including very effective work with hundreds of Native American children in the state.

Harold Alfond could arguably be the most generous philanthropist in the history of all New England. Alfond has donated millions of dollars to help children in Maine. Among the many schools that have benefited from Mr. Alfond’s generosity are the University of Maine, Colby College and the University of New England.

“I have known both honorees for many years and both are very well-respected and extremely generous and giving of their time and money,” remarked Cousy. “The Fund will honor as many as six individuals from the United States and abroad who, using basketball as their medium, have enhanced the lives of youth in their respective communities,” concluded the 13-time NBA All-Star.

The Bob Cousy Humanitarian Fund is in conjunction with the Institute for International Sport, located on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island.
