Heroes Among Us - April 2011
April 19, 2011 - Dora Masciave, Micki Chou and Komsan Say
As Dora Masciave (Marsh-ah-vay) began to say her goodbyes at the end of the work day she noticed that her colleague, Mark, was uncharacteristically missing. She searched the office and was stunned to find Mark unconscious on the floor of the file room after having a stroke.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Dora called to her colleagues, Mickie Chou (Chew) and Komsan Say (Com-san Say), and they immediately raced over. The two men worked to bring Mark back to consciousness as Dora quickly dialed 9-1-1. Mark was rushed to the hospital and because of the quick actions of his co-workers was able to make a full recovery!
For their life-saving actions, please join us in welcoming Dora Masciave, Micki Chou and Komsan Say as tonight’s Heroes Among Us.
April 17, 2011 - Allie McMullen
Allie McMullen’s life took a drastic turn when at age four she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Allie was forced to change her diet, check her blood sugar multiple times a day and endure insulin shots in order to remain alive.
Allie remained resilient and became determined to educate others about diabetes. To that end, this amazing six year-old has already presented to representatives at the State House, raised money for Children’s Hospital and is a 2011 Massachusetts Junior Ambassador for the Blue Flamingo campaign, which uses plastic flamingos to help raise awareness about diabetes and how to help!
For her extraordinary leadership at such a young age, please join us in welcoming Allie McMullen as tonight’s Hero Among Us.
April 13, 2011 - Cathy Lee
Fifth grade teacher Cathy Lee has dedicated countless hours to educating our youth and changing lives. However, she never thought she would have to physically save a student’s life. Last month during snack time in her math class, one of her students began to choke on a strawberry.
After being alerted to the situation, Cathy immediately rushed to her student. Noticing the child’s face was turning blue, she wasted no time in performing the Heimlich maneuver. Three attempts later, the food was successfully dislodged from his throat and he began to breathe again!
For her quick-thinking and life-saving actions, please join us in welcoming Cathy Lee as tonight’s Hero Among Us.
April 8, 2011 - Sean Brennan
Headed to his gym in late February, Sean Brennan thought the day would be like any other. However, in the middle of his workout, he suddenly noticed commotion coming from the locker room. After learning a man had collapsed in there, Sean raced to the scene.
Sean saw 61-year old Allan Larkin on the ground struggling to breathe before lying motionless with no pulse. Immediately, Sean began CPR and with help from an AED defibrillator was able to bring Allan back to consciousness. Amazingly, he has since made a full recovery!
