Key Moment
The New York Knicks led the Boston Celtics by as many as 26 points during the fourth quarter of Game 6 at TD Garden. Then a near-miracle happened.
Boston strung together a 20-0 run over a span of just three minutes and 37 seconds to cut New York’s lead all the way down to six with 5:44 remaining. The Knicks finally scored on an Iman Shumpert layup to end the run, but the C’s then scored the next four points to make it a four-point game.
The problem, however, is that on the ensuing possession, Carmelo Anthony got a Carmelo Anthony call.
Anthony drove from the right wing down the lane and threw up a wild shot at the basket that he – and everyone else – knew wasn’t going through the basket. It hit the backboard and nothing else. However, a whistle was blown on Brandon Bass that sent Anthony to the line for two free throws.
This wasn’t necessarily a bad call, but it was a substantial one nonetheless. Rather than the Celtics grabbing the rebound with 3:50 left on the clock with an opportunity to make it a one-possession game, Anthony headed to the line to make it a six-point game.
Talk about a blow to the gut for Boston.
The Celtics never recovered and Anthony went on to score the next five points for the Knicks, which all but wrapped up the game. Anthony’s 3-pointer with 1:43 remaining put New York on top by nine to squash Boston’s hope of a miracle.
Key Box Score Line
Kevin Garnett brought it in Game 6, just as he did in Games 1 through 5.
He may not have grabbed 17 rebounds but he did finish with the game’s only double-double. Garnett logged 15 points to go with 10 boards.
Those 15 points aren’t an indication of how good he was on offense. On a night in which every other Celtic struggled from the field, Garnett wound up hitting seven of his 10 shot attempts. He also kicked in three assists and two steals to round out the game.
Garnett absolutely emptied his tank in this game. He played more than 41 minutes, which was more than any player on New York’s roster.
You should be proud if you’re a fan of Kevin Garnett. He brought it from start to finish.
