The Atlantic Division got a little bit of a facelift over the summer, and the Celtics will meet the remodeled New York Knicks at the Garden tonight. Both teams come in 2-0, with the Celtics knocking off the Raptors and Timberwolves in Europe, while the Knicks dismissed the 76ers and Maccabi Tel Aviv in exhibition play.
Tonight's tilt marks the Garden debut of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen as Celtics, and a full house is expected to greet them for what should be anything but a garden-variety preseason game.
"I expect it to feel like a regular season game," Captain Paul Pierce said after practice on Monday. "These guys are anxious to see the home floor. They haven't seen the Garden yet [this season]. We've been gone in Rome and London and we haven't been home yet."
The C's will be slightly shorthanded, as Scot Pollard is yet to practice and is out with a left ankle injury, while reserve swingman Tony Allen was poked in the right eye in practice and is considered doubtful for tonight's contest.
The new Celtics certainly looked impressive overseas, with Garnett and Ray Allen shining in separate games. Garnett was dominant in the Celtics win over the Raptors in Rome, scoring 19 points and pulling down 16 rebounds, while Ray Allen had 28 points on 11-14 shooting in the Celtics win over Minnesota in London.
The Knicks now boast one of the biggest front lines in the NBA with Zach Randolph, acquired in the offseason from Portland, joining Eddy Curry in the New York front court.
While Curry injured his shoulder last week, according to the New York Post he returned to practice on Tuesday and reportedly expects to play tonight. Curry has yet to play for the Knicks this preseason, so it will be interesting to see how New York plays Curry with Randolph in the post.
"Adding Zach Randolph and having Curry down low, that's a monster down low. They have two guys in the post, who if they get in their spot, you literally have to double-team both of them," Celtics Coach Doc Rivers said. "I think they're going to be much better. You can not argue against the talent they have."
Curry told Knicks.com that he's excited to match up against Garnett.
"With Zach, it will kind of even it out a little bit. Boston's got a great team," Curry said. "KG obviously is a great player, and has been one for a real long time, but I feel like with the moves that they've made, we're going to have some great matchups for years to come."
The Knicks will return to the TD Banknorth Garden for the first of four regular season matchups on Thursday, November 29 for a nationally televised contest (8pm, TNT).
