CommUNITY Crew Volunteers at NECHV

BOSTON – The Celtics CommUNITY Crew, in partnership with TD Bank, spent Monday volunteering at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans despite a snow blizzard that rolled through the city just a few days before. Members of the Crew, including Celtics Legend Walter McCarty, helped to serve lunch and dinner to the guests in addition to sorting out items for the center’s supply store.

“Meeting and spending time with veterans of all ages today is something I won’t ever forget,” said McCarty. “They dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom and I’m happy we were able to show our appreciation.”

Earlier in the day, volunteers greeted and served nearly 150 veterans for lunch. While lunch was in progress, other CommUNITY Crew members spent time in the supply store. Veterans have a chance once a month to come to the store and pick up anything from lotion and soap to gently-used clothing. Volunteers unloaded clothing donations, sorted them out and put them on the racks in the store.

Following the lunch session, volunteers arrived a few hours later to help serve dinner. The veterans were in for a treat as dinner included fried chicken, ribs, cornbread and pie, to name a few portions. A record of 272 veterans attended the dinner meal and had a chance to meet McCarty, along with members of the dance team. Veterans took photos with them that included the 1986 championship trophy.

As dinner came to a close and volunteers were preparing to leave, they received several “thank yous” from the appreciative veterans.
