Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Linda Hiller first experienced the symptoms of multiple sclerosis as a senior in college but has never allowed her illness to prevent her from helping others. She is an accomplished motivational speaker focusing on disability awareness and the importance of staying positive.

For the past 26 years, Linda has been an important leader in diversity curriculum development through a program called “Understanding Our Differences”. Last year Linda received Newton's Mayor's Award for her dedicated service and May 27, 2008 was proclaimed “Linda Hiller day”!

For inspiring and improving the lives of thousands of students and teachers throughout Massachusetts; please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Linda Hiller!

March 23, 2009 - Paul Healy

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In 1996, Paul Healy founded the “Westborough Wallabies,” a Special Olympics program that he coaches in soccer and basketball. For the past 13 years, Paul has been a true hero to hundreds of Special Olympics athletes and their families. Even while experiencing the devastating personal tragedy of losing his wife to breast cancer, Paul never stopped coaching.

Paul describes his practices with the Special Olympics athletes “as the highlight of [his] week.” This energy and passion is clearly felt by the athletes as they learn new skills and even more importantly have developed their self esteem.

For his incredible devotion and passion to his Special Olympics athletes; please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Paul Healy!

March 18, 2009 - Logan MacGillivray

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Logan, an 11-year old from Nova Scotia, first learned about the hardships and poverty affecting many children throughout Sierra Leone through family friends. He was shocked by the inequalities and immediately set out to help in some way.

Logan began collecting sports equipment and school supplies. He solicited donations from local companies and has amazingly collected over $57,000 worth of supplies and donations to ship a completely packed 40-foot container of supplies to Sierra Leone. Logan's work has already benefitted 2,000 children but feels there is still more he can do and is working on sending another container this spring.

For his remarkable dedication and impact at such a young age, please join us in welcoming tonight's Hero Among Us, Logan MacGillivray.

March 13, 2009 - Dan Cummings

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Please welcome Jessica Kraft, the leader of the first place Madness Against Malaria team. Madness Against Malaria is an annual fundraising competition that raises money for bed nets in Africa. A child dies every 30 seconds from Malaria.

Over the past two years, Jessica's team has raised $17,000 protecting the lives of over 7,000 people from this terrible epidemic. Jessica is far more than a just a fundraiser, she has made a sustained commitment to global health issues. Jessica even caught Malaria herself while spending 2 years in Mozambique working with underserved populations but that hasn't stopped her from continuing her worldwide relief efforts.

For her courageous dedication to the fight against Malaria, please join us in welcoming tonight's Hero Among Us, Jessica Kraft.

March 8, 2009 - Dan Cummings

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In 2000, Dan Cummings was hanging out with friends at the lake. While diving head first into the water, a freak accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. Dan spent the next month on life support and even after leaving the hospital; Doctors predicted that he'd spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Dan, however, was determined to overcome the odds, and after over 6 years of intensive and often painful physical therapy, he amazingly began to walk again.

Since conquering his own obstacles, Dan has dedicated himself to helping others. He founded Journey Forward, a non-profit organization opening rehab centers across the country to provide intensive therapy for patients with spinal cord injuries.

March 6, 2009 - Frank Sullivan

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Frank Sullivan is a 53-year old 911 operator for the Boston Fire Department.

In January, Frank was riding the Orange Line when he witnessed a man attack and rob a student. Frank's mind flashed-back to 30 years earlier when he stood up to several unruly men in a restaurant and ended up getting shot 3 times in an attack that left him legally blind and deaf in one ear. Despite this terrible memory, Frank didn't hesitate to jump out of his seat and chase the suspect off the train. As Frank caught up to the man he was hit numerous times but managed to hold on until Police arrived to take the suspect into custody.

March 1, 2009 - Roger Brisson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

On January 19th, Gloucester fisherman Roger Brisson was ten miles off shore when he saw two men treading water in the freezing ocean alongside their capsized boat. Roger immediately sprang into action; he used a rope to pull the two men aboard his boat and made an emergency call to the Coast Guard. Roger then rushed the two men to shore where emergency vehicles rushed them to the hospital. Both men were treated for hypothermia but thanks to Roger's heroics have made a complete recovery!
