The Gengel’s [Gheng-ell] kissed their 19-year old daughter goodbye last January as she headed to Haiti for a service project. Tragically, a day into her trip, Britney was killed in the earthquake that ravaged the country.

The last text that she sent to her mother before her death read, “I want to move here and start an orphanage.” Determined to honor their only daughter’s memory and keep her spirit alive, the Gengel family now makes two trips a month to Haiti to help wherever needed and has amazingly raised over $250,000.00 to build an orphanage!

For their selfless desire to help Haiti’s youth, please welcome tonight’s Heroes Among Us, The Gengel Family!

January 14th started out as another typical day for letter carrier Stephen Nester. Suddenly, as he was delivering mail on his normal route in Lexington, he noticed smoke coming out of a nearby home. Without hesitation, Stephen immediately stopped his truck and dashed into the burning building to see if anyone needed help.

With flames set to engulf the building at any second, he saw that an elderly gentleman was trapped inside. Stephen helped the 96-year old man to safety and prevented what could have been a terrible tragedy!

Assembling a group of concerned citizens nicknamed “Six and Counting for Haiti,” Sabine led her group to three earthquake ravaged Hatian cities where they delivered tents and supplies to help the estimated one million homeless refugees. On March 7, 2006 Judy Richards’ worst nightmare came true when her healthy 22-year old daughter Kayla suddenly collapsed as she was running on a treadmill at her local gym. Kayla had suffered an abnormal heart rhythm and tragically passed away. The gym had no defibrillators that would have shocked her heart back into a normal rhythm.

Determined to prevent other families from going through this tragedy, Judy began working vigorously with local legislators to ensure that all health clubs in Massachusetts are equipped with defibrillators as well as trained staff members. Judy’s hard work was rewarded on January 4, 2007 when Kayla’s Bill was signed into law. This law has saved many lives in the last four years! v

For her unwavering dedication to the safety of others, please welcome tonight’s Hero Among Us, Judy Richards.
