Seventeen years ago, Julia was a single mother living in Boston when she fell behind on her rent and found herself homeless with no where to turn. After struggling for 11 years in the streets, Julia was able to turn her life around. By combining her life experiences, determination and creativity, she founded her own company to encourage and motivate those who have experienced poverty and homelessness. As a national advocate for the homeless, Julia has traveled across the country to increase awareness and encourage others to get involved in the cause.

After spending her adult life as a community leader and activist in Boston, Frieda has become a force in the human services field. In 1970, she founded La Alianza Hispana, which provides health, education, and social services to the Latino community. For the past 20 years, she served the president of the United South End Settlements Community Center, a haven for working-class and immigrant residents. With Frieda at the helm, U.S.E.S. has become a leading agency for those looking for a better life in our city. After two decades of service, Frieda retired last June.

After losing her job, Irene came upon an ad looking for authors and decided to try her hand at writing. Since then, she has become one of the foremost authors of children’s literature. Wanting to teach children of color the beauty, history and depth of their culture, she has written 15 multicultural books and recorded three CD’s. Irene has won writing awards from the Parent's Media Council, The New York Times, The Smithsonian Institute and the American Booksellers.

In 1996 while playing hockey for Suffolk University, John suffered a severe spinal cord injury, which left him paralyzed. Six out of seven doctors said he would never walk again, but through determination and intense physical therapy, John shocked everyone by walking for the first time after 4 1/2 years! John is now a law student and an assistant coach for the Suffolk hockey team. He is also the founder of the John Gilpatrick Spinal Cord Foundation, which is dedicated to those with spinal cord injuries.
