December 23, 2008 - Ken Bambrick

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Alan's one remaining kidney was failing, he was suffering from severe fatigue and his next step appeared to be getting hooked up to a dialysis machine just to stay alive.

Ken Bambrick heard about Alan's situation through a friend of his wife and immediately offered to be tested to see if he was a match. Ken was excited to discover that he was a nearly perfect match and together with Alan, underwent successful kidney transplant surgery. Thanks to Ken's selfless gift, Alan is now healthier than ever!

When asked why he did it, Ken simply said, "Everyone hopes they can do something that has meaning during their life."

December 21, 2008 - Charley Simmons Jr.

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Charley Simmons Jr. has dedicated his entire life to public service. Before retiring, he served 20 years in the Bloomfield Connecticut police force. After his retirement, Charley has spent the last 5 years running a group home for young adults with disabilities.

As a true testament to Charley's giving spirit, he spends his free time volunteering as a basketball coach for the Special Olympics. Charley has even sponsored and accompanied the Special Olympics athletes on trips to Cape Cod and Washington, DC.

For his lifelong dedication to serving others and unyielding commitment to those in need of support, please join us in welcoming tonight's Hero Among Us, Charley Simmons Jr.

December 19, 2008 - Rachel Shafman

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In late 2007, Rachel Shafman's mother Amy lost her life after an extended battle with cancer. She was an amazing woman who appreciated the little things in life and even in her final days was more concerned about others than herself.

After Amy's passing, Rachel was determined to carry on her mother's legacy and co-founded a non-profit called "Amy's Treat" to provide solutions to the day-to-day difficulties of living with cancer and to offer unexpected "treats" to renew the spirit. In just over a year since its inception, Amy's Treat has amazingly granted over 400 wishes and unique experiences for individuals living with cancer.

For her unyielding dedication to improving the lives of those living with cancer, please join us in recognizing Rachel Shafman.

December 15, 2008 - Dorothy Stoneman

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Dorothy Stoneman is the founder and president of YouthBuild USA, a revolutionary organization that tackles two distinct social issues: high school graduation and low-income housing. YouthBuild employs those who left high school prior to receiving a diploma and while providing them with work experience, also reconnects the youth to their education. In return, they build affordable housing in their very own communities. Stoneman's success has been dramatic and there are now 226 YouthBuild program sites throughout the country and have amazingly engaged over 84,000 young people in building 18,000 homes for those in need.

For her amazing contribution to our community, Stoneman has been presented with numerous awards including the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. Please join us in recognizing Dorothy Stoneman as tonight's Hero Among Us.

December 12, 2008 - Chris Piekos

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Chris Piekos is a sophomore Soccer goalie at UMass Amherst but he is no ordinary college student. Chris is an Iraq war veteran who won the Bronze Star for bravery as a Marine reconnaissance team leader. On May 17, 2006, Chris and two other marines entered an insurgent's safe house. They quickly came under fire and sadly one marine next to Chris was killed and the other was badly injured. Chris was able to make it out, yet did not rest there. Without hesitation, Chris led troops back into the house, and while exchanging fire was able to successfully rescue his fellow marine!

For his dedication to our country and amazing bravery under the worst of circumstances, please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Chris Piekos.

December 5, 2008 - James Brao & Alton Bynum

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

This September, 15 year olds James Brao [Bray-oh] and Alton Bynum were at the beach on a break from a Catholic retreat when they heard screams coming from the ocean. They looked up to see two boys frantically waving in danger of drowning in a severe riptide. Without hesitation, James and Alton ran toward the water and swam out to rescue the boys. Due to the strength of the powerful current the rescue took almost an hour but James and Alton did not give up and managed to bring both boys safely back to shore.

For their bravery and perseverance, please welcome James Brao and Alton Bynum. Joining them on court to express his gratitude is Shayne, one of the boys they saved.

December 3, 2008 - Stephen Bold

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

On October 14th, Firefighter Stephen Bold was at home on an off-day when he heard a neighbor yelling for help. He jumped up and ran towards the sound to see his neighbor, Michael Rose, trapped under his pickup truck screaming in pain. Michael had been working underneath his truck when it fell, rolled over his chest and pinned him underneath. Stephen immediately called 911, rolled the pickup off his neighbor and began applying first aid. Michael was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition but due to Stephen's quick thinking and poise under pressure, was able to make a full recovery!

Joining Stephen on center court to express his gratitude is Michael Rose. Please join him is congratulating the man who saved his life as tonight's Hero Among Us!

December 1, 2008 - Scott Wahlen and his fiancÚ Deborah Bernstein

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Boston Fire Captain Scott Wahlen and his fiance Deborah Bernstein have created a wonderful and lasting gift for the men and women who serve our country.

The couple cashed in all their savings, 401k plans and even sold even some of their personal property to dedicate all their resources to purchasing a villa for the families of wounded veterans and fallen firefighters on the Island of St. John. Deborah and Scott truly believe that treating these families to an amazing vacation is the least they can do to honor the sacrifices of America's men and women in uniform.

For their amazing gift and dedication to helping others, please welcome tonight's Heroes Among Us, Scott Wahlen and Deborah Bernstein.
