Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

When State Trooper Jon MacKinnon entered a Newton CVS in January to buy a bottle of water he never imagined he would be walking into a robbery in progress.

Jon immediately sprung into action and ordered the knife-wielding burglar to surrender. In an effort to escape, the robber dismissed Jon’s directions and raced outside towards his car. Without a moment’s hesitation, Jon pursued the suspect and successfully apprehended him. Thanks to Jon’s quick thinking and heroic actions he was able to arrest the suspect before anyone was harmed!

April 24, 2012 - Chris Herren

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

As a kid from Fall River, Chris Herren always dreamed of playing in the NBA. After excelling at Durfee High School, Chris went on to play at Boston College and then Fresno State despite struggling with substance abuse.

Chris’ dream became a reality when he was selected in the 1999 NBA Draft but sadly it all came to a crashing halt a few years later as his struggles with substance abuse worsened. Since 2008, Chris has been alcohol and drug-free and has traveled the country openly sharing his story with thousands of youth in the hope that they won’t make his same mistakes!

April 18, 2012 - Dr. Carol Johnson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Superintendent of Boston Public Schools Dr. Carol Johnson has dedicated over two decades to ensuring every youth has access to the best education possible.

After being the superintendent in Memphis and Minneapolis, Dr. Johnson was hired in Boston in 2007. Her wealth of experience has enabled the 57,000 Boston students to narrow its achievement gap and prepare all graduating seniors for college and career success. The ultimate champion for educating youth, Dr. Johnson has helped increase graduate rates to an all-time high in Boston Public Schools!

April 11, 2012 - Anthony Pastore

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Family has always been a priority for Anthony Pastore but he never imagined he would one day save his niece, Sarah’s life.

When Sarah was born, doctors informed her parents that she had only one kidney and it was failing. Knowing that a transplant was the only way to save her life, Anthony selflessly stepped up without hesitation. He was a perfect match and a month after Sarah turned one, the duo spent eight hours in surgery for the transplant. Four months later, both Sarah and Anthony are amazingly doing well and have a special bond that will never be broken!

April 8, 2012 - Joyce Deliyiannis

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Known for her overwhelming kindness, Joyce Deliyiannis (Dell – lee – ah – niss) is constantly making a difference in people’s lives.

In 2009, as a professional hair stylist, Joyce witnessed first-hand the toll the bad economy was taking on her clients. Week after week, clients were cancelling because they could not afford the luxury. Realizing she needed to help in some way, Joyce began providing free haircuts on her day off to those in need. To date, she has incredibly given over 2,500 free haircuts and has founded the HELPIS foundation to further her cause!

For her compassion and generous support of those in need, please join us in welcoming Joyce Deliyiannis as tonight’s Hero Among Us!

April 4, 2012 - Klare Shaw

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

For over two decades, Klare Shaw has dedicated her life to philanthropic efforts in Boston and the surrounding area.

A proud promoter of education, arts, diversity and culture, Klare has supported nonprofits such as Berklee City Music Network where she has been instrumental in raising and distributing funding for the program. Additionally, she worked tirelessly to create the Arts Expansion Initiative in the Boston Public Schools giving thousands of youth greater access to music, dance, and theater. Through her work, Klare incredibly has distributed over $2 million to support nonprofits in New England!

April 1, 2012 - Ethan LeBlanc

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Roxanne Doucette never imagined that her 3-year-old grandson, Ethan, would have saved her life.

While watching Ethan last month, Roxanne began to have a seizure and collapsed. Realizing something was terribly wrong with his grandmother, the young child immediately dialed 9-1-1. After telling the dispatcher what had happened, Ethan then amazingly remained composed on the phone for 10 minutes until the authorities arrived. Once on the scene, Ethan unlocked the door for the EMT’s and directed them towards his grandmother. Thanks to Roxanne’s little hero Ethan, she was able to make a full recovery!

For his maturity and brave actions, please join us in welcoming Ethan LeBlanc as tonight’s Hero Among Us along with his grandmother Roxanne!
