May 28, 2008 - Dr. Francis Fynn-Thompson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

After growing up in the impoverished West African country of Ghana, Francis Fynn-Thompson attended Harvard Med School, and is now a surgeon at Children's Hospital Boston. Even after many years in the United States, Dr. Fynn-Thompson has never forgotten his roots. He has dedicated himself to providing free services to children in Ghana who otherwise would not have had access to medical care.

Dr. Fynn-Thompson has led two missions to Ghana, evaluating and treating over 150 pediatric patients and performing 20 life-saving cardiac surgeries, including the country's first-ever open-heart surgery on a child - saving the life of a six year-old girl!

May 22, 2008 - Kevin and Barbara Daly

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Thirteen year-old Jimmy was riding his bike at dusk near the Norton Reservoir when he stopped to look in the water and ended up falling in. Unable to swim, he struggled to hold onto a cement ledge in the freezing cold water and frantically screamed for help. Barbara and Kevin Daly heard the cries, grabbed a flashlight and rushed toward the sound of his voice.

The Daly's found Jimmy, worked together to safely pull him out of the water and wrapped him in blankets. Due to Kevin and Barbara's quick response, tragedy was averted and Jimmy had only mild hypothermia and was able to make a full recovery!

May 20, 2008 - Lizzie Ayoub

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

When Lizzie Ayoub was seven years old, she befriended Suzanne, a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. When Suzanne died of cancer, Lizzie became determined to help other children in similar circumstances. This started with her next birthday when she asked for donations to St. Jude's instead of gifts.

Lizzie's amazing philanthropic spirit did not end there. She used her passion for singing to compose a CD with 100% of the proceeds going directly to help fund research for pediatric illnesses. At only fourteen years old, Lizzie has already performed at benefit concerts throughout the country and through her CD has amazingly raised over $15,000 to benefit kids with cancer.

For her incredible generosity to others at such a young age, please join us in welcoming tonight's Hero Among Us, Lizzie Ayoub!

May 18, 2008 - Tom Nolan

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

On April 24, the Saugus Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire. Captain Tom Nolan was first to the scene and was told that a double-leg amputee in a wheelchair was trapped on the second floor. Without even taking time to don his protective gear, Nolan rushed inside the home.

As conditions quickly worsened, Nolan made his way through the smoke and found the woman. Nolan slammed the door shut to slow the blaze and radioed for help as his breathing worsened from the smoke. Firefighter Bill Cross and Captain Donald Shea came to the rescue as they climbed the ladder, broke open the window and carried the woman to safety just in time!

May 14, 2008 - Mark Bates

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

On April 16, Northeastern University student and maintenance employee Mark Bates was working at Parson's field when he noticed a porch on fire across the park. Without hesitation, he yelled for colleagues to call 911 and then sprinted towards the home, scaling two chain-link fences along the way before finally ascending the front steps. From there, Bates ran into the smoky stairwell, alerted the family of the blaze, and assisted in getting them outside!

Just after Bates and the family safely evacuated the home, the propane tank of the barbeque grill exploded and engulfed the house in an inferno of flames.

May 8, 2008 - Gina Gilday

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Gina Gilday was born without her legs, accompanied by a significant hand abnormality and a cardiac arrhythmia, yet she has never let those obstacles get in her way. Through her constantly upbeat personality, Gina is an inspiration to everyone she meets.

Despite her handicap, Gina started playing t-ball in second grade, played softball throughout high school and now amazingly is a collegiate athlete as a catcher on the Elms College Softball team! She is an integral part of the Falcons team and is a leader in the clubhouse.

Gina says that she doesn't even want legs now, as her experience without them has given her a deeper appreciation for life.

For her infectious personality and outstanding determination, please join us in welcoming Gina Gilday!

May 6, 2008 - Joaquim Antunes

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Gulf War Veteran and 10-year member of the Boston Police Department, Joaquim Antunes, was on a public works detail in April when he heard a man's loud voice and the fearful cries of a woman.

Without regard for his own safety, Antunes called for backup and ran to the building, ringing all the buzzers at once until the door was finally opened. A man answered the door saying that he was just arguing with his girlfriend but Antunes found the woman in severe danger holding her 18-month old daughter.

Antunes and another officer arrested the enraged man before anything could escalate into a potentially tragic situation.

For his quick and decisive actions to aid a woman in need, please join us in welcoming Officer Joaquim Antunes!

May 4, 2008 - Andrew Lawson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Andrew Lawson was born with Down Syndrome but has never let his disability stand in the way of his dreams. Blessed with a wonderful support group, Andrew has been able to attend regular classes and participate in multiple sports.

Due to his contagiously optimistic personality, Andrew has an undeniable influence on all of his teammates. Incredibly, he is a three-sport varsity athlete at Norwell High School and this past January scored 11 points on senior night, helping lead his team to victory.

For his amazing perseverance and inspirational story, please join us in welcoming tonight's Hero Among Us, Andrew Lawson!

Joining Andrew on court are the seniors from Norwell High School's Basketball team!
