Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

At the age of four, Amiel Reid began to suffer from debilitating sickle cell lung attacks causing his body to wear down.

Amiel enrolled in a clinical trial at Boston Children’s Hospital and has been symptom-free for the last 12 years. Now a college freshman, he impressively researches cures for sickle cell in the lab of a world-renowned stem cell researcher! Amiel is not only an inspiration to others but has also made it his life’s goal to find a cure for the disease.

March 26, 2013 - Kim Charlson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Having lost her eye sight at a young age Kim Charlson has dedicated her life to helping others improve their independence and mobility.

As an international leader and fervent advocate for people who are blind, Kim serves as Director of the Perkins Library which provides accessible audio, large print and Braille materials. Not stopping there, she advises the U.S. government on issues ranging from accessible currency to the danger of quiet cars. Kim’s leadership has amazingly led to audio descriptions for films and television programs as well as “talking” ATMs!

March 18, 2013 - Spc. Jessica Pedraza

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

After growing up with a military mother, Specialist Jessica Pedraza always knew she wanted to serve her country.

In 2008, Jessica realized her dream when she enlisted into the Mass Army National Guard and deployed to Iraq and Kuwait a few years later. Last month while on duty to help those who lost power during winter storm Nemo, her training was put to the test when she rushed to stabilize and save a man who was suffering from seizures. In recognition of her life saving actions, Jessica was awarded the Army Commendation Medal!

March 16, 2013 - Corinne Ferguson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Corinne Ferguson has dedicated the last 17 years of her life to helping those in the Boston community through her work in education, housing, the arts and youth development.

Serving as the Chair of City Year Boston, Corinne has been instrumental in helping the organization work with thousands of youth to bridge the educational gap. She is also involved with several other non-profits including Pine Street Inn and the Boys and Girls Club Boston. Having served an amazing 15,000 volunteer hours and counting, Corinne continues to make a positive impact on the lives of others!

March 13, 2013 - Robert Johnson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Robert Johnson has dedicated the last 43 years of his life to helping those with intellectual disabilities gain opportunity and access to education and sport.

After working in public schools for two decades, Robert arrived at Special Olympics Massachusetts in 1989. Under his leadership the organization has amazingly tripled the number of athletes served from 4,000 in his first year to nearly 13,000! Robert will be retiring as President and CEO of Special Olympics Massachusetts at the end of this month but his legacy will continue on!

March 8, 2013 - Susan, Matthew and Jonathan Zuker

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

The lives of Susan and her sons, Matthew and Jonathan Zuker forever changed when their husband and father, Michael, died of cancer in 2004.

Wanting no other family to endure the pain they went through, the Zuker family founded The Conquer Cancer Coalition of Massachusetts. The non-profit raises money when fellow citizens purchase “Conquer Cancer” license plates with proceeds going to cancer organizations. Since 2006 an incredible 5,000 license plates are on the roads and over $500,000 has been raised to aid in the quest to end cancer!

For their unyielding efforts in the fight against cancer, please join us in celebrating the Zuker family as Heroes Among Us.

March 1, 2013 - Abraham Bonilla

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Last month, 18-year old Abraham Bonilla entered his three-family home and knew immediately that something was wrong as he began to smell smoke in the hallway.

Realizing the smoke was coming from an apartment on the second floor, Abraham kicked in the door and rushed his neighbors safely out of the building. He then ran back in to rescue his family on the third floor just seconds before the house engulfed in flames. Thanks to Abraham’s bravery all 12 people survived what could have been a terrible tragedy!
