Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Ten years ago, Ralph, the Director of Veterans Volunteer Services, and Anthony, a war wounded Vietnam Veteran, joined forces to create the New England Winter Sports Clinic for Disabled Veterans to reassure them that their sacrifices for this country will never be forgotten.

Every January, this week-long event brings together over a hundred volunteers to help disabled veterans enjoy skiing and snowboarding despite their disabilities. Over the past ten years, hundreds of Veterans have been able to experience the joys of winter sports because of the work of these two men.

For their support and dedication to disabled veterans, please join us in welcoming today's Heroes Among Us, Anthony Santilli and Ralph Marche.

March 7, 2007 - Carla Lynton

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In 1974, Ms. Lynton first volunteered at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown Massachusetts. Over the past 33 years she has spent more than 22,000 hours volunteering with the deaf-blind community at Perkins. While officially a volunteer, through her amazing efforts and dedication, she is indistinguishable from the paid staff.

More than 400 students who are deaf-blind have had their lives transformed by Ms. Lynton's compassion and generosity. Ms. Lynton accepts this award on behalf of the 1,000 staff members and volunteers from the Perkins community.

For her unyielding devotion to children who are deaf-blind and to Perkins as a whole, please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Carla Lynton!

March 9, 2007 - Mike Dennehy

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In 1990, as a BU Freshman, Mike heard about Upward Bound, a program designed to help low-income Boston high school students be the first generation of their families to go to, and graduate from college. During the past 17 years, Mike has helped more than 800 students achieve the dream of a college degree.

Eight years ago, Mike was named the director of BU's Upward Bound program and under his leadership, 95% of his students have pursued higher education. Over and over again, students have exclaimed, "Without Mike and Upward Bound, I would not have gone to college!"

For his dedication to the future of low-income High school Students, please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Mike Dennehy!

March 11, 2007 - Stefan Nathanson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Stefan is the founder of The Room to Dream Foundation - a local charity whose mission is to create healing environments for children facing chronic and debilitating illnesses. The hope is that with an "extreme makeover" of the child's bedroom, it will improve their quality of life, promote strength, self-worth, and aid in the recovery process.

Founded just last year, the foundation has incredibly received over $500,000 in goods and services. Every renovation is tailored to the specific needs of the child. Through volunteers that include architects, interior decorators, and builders, the Foundation gives children the room to dream for a healthier future.

For his amazing commitment to improving the lives of chronically ill children, please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Stefan Nathanson!

March 14, 2007 - Dylan DeSilva

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

At age 12, Dylan first sent a care package to a group of Massachusetts soldiers in Iraq as part of a Boy Scout project. Three years later, Dylan continues to send packages to soldiers oversees and has founded "Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops" to encourage others to donate as well.

Through Dylan's hard work and leadership, over 1,500 care packages have been sent and over $40,000 has been raised. Dylan travels to VA hospitals to hand-deliver gifts to soldiers around the holidays and is even collecting toys for our soldiers to give to children in Iraqi orphanages.

For his dedication to our troops and unbelievable initiative at such a young age, please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, Dylan DeSilva.

March 21, 2007 - John Duffy

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

John is an engineering professor at UMass Lowell and in 1997 blended his expertise in the field with a desire to help others to create the Village Empowerment Project. Twice each year, John takes 18 students to Peru to install solar panels for remote villages. This has enabled over 35 villages to have electricity for medical clinics and be equipped with refrigeration for vaccines.

In addition, John and his students have installed solar powered pumps for access to clean water and have raised money to donate HAM radios allowing them to communicate during medical emergencies.

For his dedication to the health and well-being of those in need, please welcome tonight's Hero Among Us, John Duffy.

March 23, 2007 - John Gonsalves

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

John is the president and founder of Homes for our troops. In just three years since its inception, Homes for our Troops has collected over $10 million in donations. This money is used to build adaptive homes for severely wounded veterans. All of the planning, materials, and labor are done at absolutely no cost to the veteran's family. This Massachusetts based organization has built homes for disabled veterans in sixteen states and has many more projects planned for the future.

For his dedication to assisting our disabled veterans, please welcome tonight's hero among us, John Gonsalves.

March 26, 2007 - Sean Cronk

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Born with Cerebral Palsy, Sean has never let his inability to run stop him from his favorite activity, playing basketball. As a junior at Everett High School, Sean was promoted to the Varsity team for the League Championship game, not just to sit on the bench, but because he was the best free throw shooter in Everett.

Up by 2 points with less than a minute remaining, Sean's teammate was fouled hard and needed to come out of the game. Without hesitation, the coach called on Sean to shoot the free throws. Sean swished them both to seal the victory and the league championship!

For his inspiration to us all of us and amazing ability to overcome his disability, please welcome tonight's hero among us, Sean Cronk.

March 28, 2007 - Kevin Whalen

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Kevin heard the story of Selena, an Iraq veteran, displaced by Hurricane Rita, who gave birth several months premature to a very sick baby needing 24-hour care at Children's Hospital. Selena was stranded in Boston with nobody to turn to.

Kevin dedicated the next months of his life to assisting Selena, a woman he had never met! He helped raise money for her through his radio talk show, spent his free time finding housing so that she could stay in Boston with her baby, and even donated 3 months of his salary to Selena's cause. Kevin with assistance from Soldiers Angels, acquired over $25,000 in donations, and because of this, mother and daughter and are now home and doing well.

For his unbelievable dedication to a complete stranger in need, please join us in welcoming Kevin Whalen.
