Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In honor of Mass Mentoring Night and the Celtics commitment to the 3,000 youth currently on the waiting list for a mentor, we would like to recognize Lisa Purter, a mentor and proud supporter of Big Sister of Greater Boston.

Despite raising two boys, working a fulltime job and going to graduate school, Lisa knew it was important to become a mentor. She has devoted countless hours to Rashanda in order to give her new and meaningful experiences like going to the beach, seeing a play and attending their first Celtics game!

For her dedication to mentoring, please join us in celebrating Lisa Purter as a Hero Among Us.

January 24, 2013 - Gerard McDonough

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Burlington Police Sergeant Gerard McDonough has dedicated his life to serving and protecting those in our community but in December of 2012, he also made a huge impact in Virginia.

As Christmas approached, Gerard learned of Nathan, a five-year-old cancer patient whose wish was to receive cards from his heroes - police officers! Knowing he could do even more, Gerard organized a trip down to Virginia with an amazing 250 fellow officers. Nathan’s joy when he opened the door and saw the officers is a memory no one will ever forget!

January 18, 2013 - Brian Boyle

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In 2004, Brian Boyle’s life dramatically changed when his car was hit by a truck causing him to lose 60 percent of his blood.

Thanks to American Red Cross donors, blood was available for the multiple transfusions required to save Brian’s life, yet was told he would never walk again. Against all odds, he is now amazingly a competitive marathoner and Ironman tri-athlete while supporting the American Red Cross. Brian has influenced tens of thousands of people to donate blood, become a national spokesman and was recognized by the White House as a Champion of Change.

January 16, 2013 - Randy Clarke

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In December of 2012, MBTA security official Randy Clarke left his office to buy lunch for his staff and never imagined he would end up chasing down a suspect.

After using the ATM, Randy witnessed a man assaulting a woman nearby and immediately sprang into action. As he headed toward the altercation, the suspect began to flee but Randy ran right after him while calling 9-1-1. Following 10 blocks of pursuit, Randy along with the help of police were able to apprehend the suspect preventing further harm.

January 14, 2013 - Sergeant Eileen Boyle

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

In honor of Seats for Soldiers night, the Celtics would like to recognize Eileen Boyle, a sergeant in the Mass Army National Guard who has dedicated the last 10 years to protecting our country.

Since returning from two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and receiving several medals and commendations, Sgt Boyle currently teaches a suicide prevention class to soldiers. Her expertise was put to the test last November as she helped to save a civilian attempting to end her life. Extending her influence beyond the military and into society, Sgt Boyle successfully averted what could have been a terrible tragedy!

January 11, 2013 - Edward Norton

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

For the last 11 years, Boston police officer Edward Norton has dedicated his life to protecting our community.

While on duty last month, Edward was the first to arrive on scene after receiving a call that a woman was drowning in the Boston Harbor. Without a moment’s hesitation, he leaped into the frigid water with a life preserver in hand and swam to the victim. Incredibly Edward was able to reach the woman within a minute and keep her afloat until further help arrived averting what could have been a terrible tragedy!

January 9, 2013 - Sidney Kushner

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

After learning that over 350,000 children in the United States are currently fighting cancer, college student Sidney Kushner knew he needed to help in some way.

To ensure that children remained positive during treatment, Sidney founded Connecting Children with Champions, a nonprofit that pairs patients with professional athletes creating long lasting friendships. Since its inception a few years ago, the program has expanded from Pittsburgh to Providence and will soon launch in Boston. Amazingly, over 300 youth have been inspired through their friendships as they fight their battle with cancer!

January 4, 2013 - John Morrell

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

TD Bank store manager John Morrell never imagined that he would one day save a person’s life.

While volunteering at the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter early last month, John witnessed one of their guests begin to choke at dinner. Without a moment’s hesitation, he rushed to the man’s side and began to perform the Heimlich maneuver. John was able to successfully dislodge the obstruction and thanks to his quick actions the man began to breathe again!

January 2, 2013 - Leo Podolske & Luke Tripp

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Last September while driving through Dedham, strangers Leo Podolske and Luke Tripp never imagined they would be connected forever as they worked together to save a woman’s life.

After noticing smoke and flames coming from a car in front of him, Leo immediately stopped his car and rushed over to the scene. While he attempted to extinguish the fire, Luke navigated his car to block traffic from the fiery accident. Leo was then able to grab the driver and successfully drag her from the wreckage. Thanks to their selfless acts, the driver survived this terrible tragedy!
