Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Ben Johnston’s life forever changed last year after learning that a neighbor of his friend’s was ill and in desperate need of a kidney.

Ben volunteered to be tested and it was confirmed that he was a match. Time was of the essence as the man was suffering from kidney failure for the second time and Ben knew he had to help. A few months ago, the two went into surgery together as Ben donated his kidney to the man in need, amazingly saving his life!

For his selfless act, please join us in celebrating Ben Johnston as a Hero Among Us.

February 12, 2014 - Cory and Ruben Fitz-Marquez

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

With more than 7,000 Massachusetts children in foster care and thousands more waiting for a loving family, Cory and Ruben Fitz-Marquez knew they needed to help make a difference.

To that end, the two began working with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in order to decrease this staggering statistic. Over the last 8 years, Cory and Ruben have served as the go-to family for emergency placements always keeping their doors open. The couple has amazingly provided a safe and loving home for 58 kids giving them the family they have always wished for!

February 9, 2014 - Billy Starr

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Having seen first-hand how devastating cancer can be to everyone involved, Billy Starr has dedicated the last 34 years to raising money for cancer research.

In 1980, Billy founded the Pan-Mass Challenge, the most successful athletic fundraising event in the nation. The 190-mile bike-a-thon attracts thousands of cyclist each year as the world comes together for such a great cause. The PMC has incredibly raised over $400 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute!

February 7, 2014 - Denisha Woodberry

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

High school senior Denisha Woodberry has been a proud member of the Blue Hill Boys and Girls Club for over ten years.

Seeing first-hand how the club positively affects youth, Denisha wanted to give back and currently serves as a junior staff for the club. Day-in and day-out, she works with the younger kids to complete their homework assignments all the while stressing the importance of education. Denisha’s leadership and dedication to enriching the lives of others continues outside of the club as she regularly volunteers at non-profits such as Pine Street Inn!

February 2, 2014 - Bill Battis

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Over the last two decades, Bill Battis has dedicated his life to providing a high-quality education for students.

As the History Department Head at Marshfield High School, Bill serves as a mentor, coach and friend to hundreds of youth daily. Additionally, he is the Bullying and Harassment officer, ensuring that students feel and remain safe during and outside of their school days. Bill has incredibly taught more than 2,500 students to be great in and out of the classroom!
