December 31, 2013 - Kathleen Roberts

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

For most of the last century, 99-year-old Kathleen Roberts dedicated herself to public education and helping others.

After graduating from college in 1937, Kathleen began her teaching career and was an integral part of the modern development of our nation’s public education system. As a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, she fought for women’s and civil rights for her colleagues and students, mentored hundreds of new teachers and spearheaded the passage of the nation’s first bilingual education bill. Although retired, Kathleen amazingly volunteers 30 hours a week as she continues to inspire others!

On behalf of the 80,000 teachers in the state, please join us in celebrating Kathleen Roberts as a Hero Among Us.

December 28, 2013 - Rene & Andrew Bilodeau

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Rene Bilodeau and his son Andrew will never forget the day they saved a boy’s life.

Last July, the duo noticed a boy struggling to stay afloat in the Androscoggin River. Without a moment’s hesitation, Andrew leapt into the river while Rene called 9-1-1. Andrew brought the boy to safety and Rene immediately began performing CPR until help arrived. The boy has since made a full recovery preventing what could have been a terrible tragedy!

December 21, 2013 - Andrea Nevins

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

At such a young age, high school sophomore Andrea Nevins knows the importance of giving back to the community.

Andrea has spent countless hours volunteering through her work with the non-profits, Boston Cares and Best Buddies and participated in Governor Patrick’s youth ambassador program, Project 351. Earlier this month she took on an even larger leadership role serving as the state director for the Miss Amazing Pageant. The pageant, dedicated to building self esteem in young girls with disabilities incredibly worked with dozens of girls to further their confidence in a safe and supportive environment!

December 18, 2013 - Roosevelt Robinson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

For nearly 25 years, Roosevelt Robinson has dedicated his life to education and the sport of basketball and football.

Roosevelt began his coaching career in 1990 at Roxbury’s Madison Park High School as head football coach and assistant basketball coach. He has since developed the football team into a city powerhouse having earned three MIAA Super Bowl appearances. For his efforts to help youth on and off the field, Roosevelt was awarded the 2013 Double-Goal Coach Award from the Positive Coaching Alliance of New England!

December 16, 2013 - Michael Szczepkowski

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

For the last 17 years, Michael Szczepkowski has been a leader in advocating for the arts.

As Vice President and General Manager for Citi Performing Arts Center, Michael is responsible for the health and safety of every person who enters the theatres. While his responsibilities focus on the production and operations side of the organization, he always goes the extra mile to support the arts education and community outreach programs. Through these programs, Michael and Citi Center incredibly serve thousands of youth and families each year!

December 13, 2013 - Tim McLaughlin

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Tim McLaughlin has dedicated his life to protecting our country.

As a United States Marine, Tim was at the forefront during the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon and provided assistance to the emergency personnel at the scene. He would later deploy to Iraq where he was engaged in significant combat operations. Upon leaving the Marine Corps, Tim knew he wanted to give back to the community and now serves as president of Veterans Legal Services, a non-profit that promotes self-sufficiency, stability and financial security for Boston’s homeless and low-income veterans!

December 11, 2013 - Keysha Nunez

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Last month as high school student Keysha Nunez arrived at school, she smelled smoke nearby.

Sensing something was wrong, Keysha immediately alerted the school police officer and together the two raced over to a neighboring house where smoke was billowing from the roof. Disregarding her own safety, she ran into the fiery building to evacuate the residents. Incredibly, thanks to Keysha’s efforts, all 17 residents were saved from the imminent danger with no injuries reported!

December 6, 2013 - Jonah Shea

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Following a tragic diving accident in 2007, Jonah Shea sought to impact the world in a positive way.

A few years later, Jonah’s goal became a reality when he founded Shea’s Youth Basketball Association. The non-profit works with high-risk youth to provide free programs including basketball leagues, tutoring services and community outreach projects. Shea’s Youth Basketball Association incredibly works with over 100 kids as they strive to educate participants on the importance of teamwork, responsibility and respect!
