Heroes Among Us - December 2012

December 21, 2012 - Mary Abramson

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Mary Abramson has spent the last 12 years spreading holiday joy to those in need.

Realizing that many families didn’t have the resources to purchase winter coats, hats and gifts during the holiday season, Mary knew she had to assist in some way. With the help of over 20 volunteers, she has filled 650 baskets this year with essential items for families. Incredibly, since the inception of the program, Mary and volunteers have served over 5,000 families and 100 organizations!

For her efforts to give those in need a memorable holiday, please join us in celebrating Mary Abramson as a Hero Among Us.

December 8, 2012 - Kevin Ambrose

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

Springfield police officer Kevin Ambrose devoted his life to the safety of those around him.

This past summer while responding to a domestic disturbance call, Kevin arrived on the scene unaware of what was to come. While supervising the situation, the subject suddenly became violent and fired upon him. Tragically, Kevin was fatally wounded mere months before his anticipated retirement.

For his lifelong commitment to protecting our community, please join us in recognizing Kevin’s wife, Carla, and their two children Kyle and Krista who accepted the Hero Among Us award on his behalf.

December 5, 2012 - Abby Bennett

Heroes Among Us

The Heroes Among Us award is a program of the Boston Celtics, presented by the Mass State Lottery.

On September 20th of 2012, eighth grader Abby Bennett thought her school day would be just like any other. However, she never imagined that she would save her best friend’s life.

While at lunch, Abby witnessed her lifelong friend Kendall begin to choke. Without a moment’s hesitation, she jumped up, grabbed Kendall and began to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her friend. Thanks to Abby’s poise under pressure she was able to quickly dislodge the obstruction and Kendall began to breathe normally!

For her brave and life saving actions, please join us in celebrating Abby Bennett as a Hero Among Us.
