Citizens Bank and Boston Celtics Host Summer Caravan for Roxbury Youth

WALTHAM, MA (September 18, 2004) - The Citizens Bank Summer Caravan made its fourth and final stop of 2004 at the Sports Authority Training Center at HealthPoint, bringing the Boston Celtics to more than 90 Boston area children.

The Citizens Bank Summer Caravan, now in its seventh year, is a series of free, interactive basketball clinics designed to expose youth to NBA basketball in a fun setting.

Celtics players Walter McCarty and Kendrick Perkins taught basketball fundamentals to the children through interactive drills. The players also spoke to the children about important life skills, taking pride in their education, setting goals, and giving their all to achieve those goals.

"It's great being able to come out and have the opportunity to work with this amazing group of kids," McCarty said. "The Celtics and Citizens Bank have created a great program to get involved in the community and give back to some of our young fans."

All of the children who participated in the Citizens Bank Summer Caravan received a T-shirt, autographed pictures of the players, and ice cream. The youth came from United South End Settlements in Roxbury. Since its launch in 1997, the traveling Summer Caravan has reached thousands of children throughout New England.

"It's a pleasure to bring the Citizens Bank Summer Caravan and the Boston Celtics to children served by the United South End Settlements, this quarter's winner of the Community Champions program for its outstanding commitment to our communities," said Robert E. Smyth, President and CEO of Citizens Bank of Massachusetts. "We hope today's workshop will leave a lasting impression on these children as they not only learned basketball fundamentals, but life skills such as hard work, dedication, and achieving their goals. We thank the Celtics for hosting us in this special facility."
