Celtics Forward Ricky Davis joins Roxbury YMCA in Assisting Families in Need by Distributing Thanksgiving Turkeys

ROXBURY, MA (November 19, 2005) - Celtics forward Ricky Davis joined the Roxbury YMCA of Greater Boston in helping to make Thanksgiving a little more complete for families in Roxbury this afternoon when he joined the organization in giving away more than 300 turkeys at the Roxbury YMCA. Davis was joined at the event by his fiancee and Celtics Women's Group member Vanessa Ramirez, as well as several local and business dignitaries.

"I am glad that I am in a position to go into the community and help those less fortunate," Davis said. "I am always pleased to be able to go out into the community and help the fans, especially around the holiday season. It is an honor for me to be included in the Roxbury YMCA's thanksgiving turkey giveaway, and I thank them for the opportunity to assist those in need."

This is the Roxbury YMCA's fifth annual turkey giveaway, organized by the "No Books No Ball" basketball program. Parents, friends and supporters of the program joined Davis in giving back to the community with more than 600 individuals making donations to help purchase the turkeys. "No Books No Ball" Coordinator and Roxbury YMCA Sports Program Director Tony Richards explains that giving these turkeys to families in need helps let our children know the community cares about them. "This not only lets our children know that we remember them during difficult times, it also lets the people in the community know that in hard times we must stand strong and help each other," Richards explained. "Our children must also learn to give back and help others."

"Over the past several months, families have suffered through some of the hardest times in recent history," Roxbury YMCA Executive Director Curtis Jones explained. "Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wanda; local floods, tornados, high gas prices and local violence. So we are pleased we were able to partner with Ricky to do something positive for the community."

Families receiving vouchers for turkeys were from agencies including Charles Street AME Church, Talbot Avenue Boys and Girls Club, Boston Police Gang Task Force, Bethel AME Church, Grace Church of All Nations, South Boston Neighborhood House, Holy Tabernacle Church, The Nation of Islam, Morning Star Baptist Church, Greater Love Tabernacle, A.B.C.D, The Shelburn Recreation Center, Grand Family Home, Youth and Christian Ministry, MLK Towers, Senior Housing, Roxbury YMCA's Seniors on the Move, After School and Pre-School programs, the Roxbury YMCA "No Book No Ball" basketball program, as well as a number of individuals.
