Boston Celtics Head Coach Jim O’Brien, Celtics Co-Captain Antoine Walker, Celtics players Walter McCarty and Shammond Williams joined Pierce and approximately forty students from grades 1-3, to select and read stories and make bookmarks incorporating their favorite storybook characters.
“I’ve learned that reading a good book can be just as much fun as playing basketball. I’m looking forward to visiting schools each month with members of the Celtics All-Star Reading Team to help kids improve their reading skills,” said NBA Read to Achieve spokesman and Celtics Co-Captain Paul Pierce.
Books read by the group included “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Felicia Bond and Laura Joffe Numeroff, and “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” by Jon Sciezka and Lane Smith. Additional reading team members who participated in the event included Sharon O’Brien, wife of Celtics Head Coach Jim O’Brien, Stacy Conner, wife of Celtics Assistant Coach Lester Conner, and Shaw’s Supermarkets Manager of Public Relations Bernie Rogan.
The Read to Achieve program, now in its second year, is a season-long partnership between the Boston Celtics and ReadBoston to host monthly reading activities and events that are designed to help promote the importance of reading and education among local youth and their families. The Read To Achieve program is sponsored locally by Shaw’s Supermarkets and Aquafina.
Members of the Boston Celtics All-Star Reading Team include: Senator John Kerry (D-MA); Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA); Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino; Celtics Head Coach Jim O’Brien and his wife Sharon; Celtics Co-Captains Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker; Celtics legend JoJo White; Celtics Trainer Ed Lacerte; Stacy Conner, wife of Celtics Assistant Coach Lester Conner; WLVI-TV Anchor Frank Mallicoat; AT&T Broadband Reporter Trina Foster; WHDH-TV Sports Anchor Gene Lavanchy; Boston Globe Sports Writer Shira Springer; Boston Herald Assistant Sports Editor Mark Murphy; Shaw’s Supermarkets Manager of Public Relations Bernie Rogan and Fox Sports NET New England General Manager David Woodman.

Reaching an estimated 50 million children a year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports.
