Walter McCarty honored by Boston City Council
Boston City Councillor John M. Tobin, Jr. today officially recognized basketball star Walter McCarty with a City Council resolution and thanked the Boston Celtics forward for creating the I Love Music Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports music education programs for local children.
"Walter McCarty is a role model for youth whether he's playing on a basketball or singing into a microphone," said Councillor Tobin, chair of the City Council's Committee on Arts, Film, Humanities & Tourism. "Music and arts programs open new worlds to young people and help them nurture their talents and interests. Unfortunately many of those programs are disappearing from schools across the nation. We are so fortunate that Walter McCarty has chosen to share his passion for music with the children of our city."
Councillor Tobin, who represents West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain, presented the resolution to Mr. McCarty at a small ceremony in Boston City Hall. Tonight the Boston Celtics will kick-off the 2004-2005 basketball season when they face the Philadelphia 76ers at the FleetCenter.
Mr. McCarty created the I Love Music Foundation in 2002 and serves as its president. The foundation works to enhance children's lives through music by providing funds, resources and educational opportunities in Boston and in his home town of Evansville, IN. Mr. McCarty, who is also a singer, producer and self-taught musician, began the foundation to help youth foster an understanding and appreciation of music.
