Banner Moments

The story of the Boston Celtics is a story of tradition. It has been written over the years by a broad and diverse Celtics family. This family includes legendary players like Cousy, Bird and Pierce; Celtics fans from Beantown and around the world; and one of the most influential storytellers in Celtics history, Red Auerbach. It includes 17 Championship Banners and countless Banner Moments.

It is a story marked by triumph and defined by loyalty. Most importantly, it is a story that belongs to all who have taken part in its creation. And this season, the Celtics want to capture this story and compile the chapters as told by you, the season ticket holders.

What is your Celtics Banner Moment, the most important way that the Celtics story has overlapped with your own? Share your piece of the story and your moment could be highlighted on Celtics.com for your friends and family and Celtics fans everywhere to see! Even more special, many of the best Banner Moments shared throughout the season will be honored with special Celtics experiences that will give selected season ticket holders the opportunity to create new Banner Moments in 2009-10.

STH Joel has been a Celtics season ticket holder for well over 30 years, and a fan for even longer. His daughter Amy, now grown, was born into fandom and had little choice but root for her dad's beloved team.

Somewhere along the line, Joel passed along his love for Celtics Basketball, and Amy came to love the team not just out of habit, but of enthusiasm, just like her dad.

My Banner Moment is the first time I met Red Auerbach. It was my second week working for the Celtics and I bumped into Red in the hallway. He asked me who the 'heck' I was. Before I knew it I was pulled into his office [which looked like a basketball museum] and he peppered "the new guy" with questions about my background. When he found out I graduated from Duke he started telling me stories about his coaching stint there [I had no idea he had coached at Duke]. For almost twenty minutes I sat there in his office captivated as Red took me back to his days in Durham, NC. It's a moment I will never forget. When I returned to my desk downstairs the air was filled with cigar smoke [we shared an air duct with Red's office]. The smoke made it a little difficult to breathe but I wasn't complaining!

My Banner Moment was when I was a rookie first entering the league. I was young and just trying to find my way. It was 1977, and I had just gotten off the plane to go meet with Red Auerbach and Coach Tommy Heinsohn. I barely had enough money for the taxi ride from the airport to the Garden. I walked into the room, and Red and Tommy just stared at me...it was dead silent. We started to negotiate my contract...3 years for $300,000. My leg started shaking under the table, because I couldn't even think about what I would do with all that money. I was so excited, but then my attorney said 'we don't accept.' I didn't end up getting more money, but I'll tell you what I did with my first check. I went to the bank and asked the teller to give me $1,000 in all one dollar bills. I went back to my house, spread the money out all on my bed and started to roll around in it. That's when I knew it was real and I was about to start an amazing journey.
